I actually agree about the MON team. I don't doubt that at.

I know, would have loved to have been able to keep him until at least January

It's just less painful to assume we'll get well beaten and hopefully be proved wrong (and trust me, no one will be more delighted than me if I end up having to apologise for getting it wrong) than to think we have a chance and be disappointed.

You have to admit, mate, there have been an awful lot of disappointing nights in the last decade and very, very few happy surprises.

On the whole, though, I'm less pessimistic than most years as I think this looks like being a good window finally, we have a good manager (Rodgers and Ange are/were on a different level to what we usually have) and the draw looks more feasible than usual.

    People overestimating Villa massively imo.

They’re slight favourite, but it’s a tie we should go into aiming to take something from. It’s not like a Real or Man City game where you know it’s going to be backs to the wall, and you’re holding your breath each time they have the ball.

I expect us to go toe to toe with them and equip ourselves well in doing so.

Something to look forward to, hopefully we can be competitive.

It's a very, very easy draw. Saying that, I still don't think we can compete. This club does not want to progress and it's clear from the way we handle the transfers and the *, old fashioned structure that we use. I can see us getting few points but it's gonna be the same * as every other year.

I get the pessimism, and of course we haven't shown up in Europe for a long time. I just get riled up by the OTT praise for the EPL. Stick any bottom half EPL sides in the CL groups we've had and they'd do as bad as us or worse. Villa got knocked out of the EL by Lille last year, the team that finished 4th in the EPL. It really isn't so far ahead. We'd expect to give any team from Ligue 1 outside of PSG a game, and I'd expect the same for any team outside of the top 6 or so in England. Doesn't mean we're favourites, but the EPL definitely isn't as far ahead as you're suggesting, and putting ourselves down gets us nowhere.

I watched Everton at the weekend and they were utter dugmeat. I'd fully expect us to beat them.

EDIT: Villa beat Lille on pens actually, but got dumped out by Olympiakos, who we'd also expect to give a game to home or away.

Surely after our spending in this window we will be competing on at least a even level with 4 of those 8 teams and 3 of them are home games. 9 points from those games isn't beyond us

It's feels like we have an understandable level of cynicism around competing at champions league level but there is no excuse for failing to compete against brugge, young boys and bratislava at home. These are no more champions league teams than we are with a level of spending lower or equal to ours. I feel like if we had a europa league group in previous format with those 3 teams people would be feeling pretty confident.

That's another Europe League level group. We can't not be qualifying out of that

Just looking through the draw. Genuinely think we have by far the easiest draw out of every team. Like by a long shot.

If we were well prepared, you would be confident. Unfortunately we are far away from prepared.

    Absolutely great draw for us.

Some supercomputer ran some tests on the new format and they found out that 9 points should get you a spot in the top 24.

That's definitely doable with our draw. Should be winning home games against Slavia Bratislava, Club Brugges and Young Boys. Could potentially take points of Zagreb.

This has the potential to earn us north of another £10m on top of what we're guaranteed.

    * push the boat out Celtic! We could've qualified last season if we had done that!

    We * deserve it tbh.

Too many years of drawing AC Milan and Barcelona. Two of the best teams in the world when we played them in multiple seasons.

As long as we don't get any hammerings and pick up a few good results along the way i'd be happy, just want us to give a good account of ourselves.

Certainly bang on with the dam mate, about 30/40 BBB joined Celtic on that trip, I was by no means involved in anything the CSC did but a few of the boys used were from Cumbernauld and went on our bus.

Disagree with about all of that. Ffs mate, surely there's some reasons to be optimistic so far this season.

To be fair, mate, I have no right to feel so confident about this. I rarely watch full games that don't involve Celtic and if I do, it's the best teams. My entire impression of the EPL has been formed from watching teams like Man City and Liverpool playing the likes of Real Madrid. I can't remember the last time I watched a team like Everton other than YouTube highlights. Yet I do genuinely feel quite confident that we would lose, It's clearly something similar to the Dunning-Kruger effect.

    Go figure. :39:
