So much for “smashing the Scottish record”. Same as Jotas last year and same as KT about 5 years ago!

What people don't get. It's fine being in the CL but if you're a whipping boy it's no fun and may end up having the opposite effect of attracting people.

I’ve spoke about this in the past. Not so much for keeping hold of current players, as the model definitely should be to shift players on for big fees, I’ve no issue with that. However, when you get fans going on about how difficult it is to bring players to Scotland, if we showed some level of ambition in Europe and done well, we would then find it easier to both sell on top players to big clubs for big money, and we would also find it easier to bring better players here as they would see what can happen if you do well. They are all linked.

The fee will end up around the £28m mark I reckon. Brighton clearly mean business here though. Tell them it’s £28m and we’re not prepared to accept anything less, get the deal done because I think they will pay that, and we move on. Said over a month ago that I feared this going into the last week, because it will then give the board and some fans the excuse of “we never had enough time” nonsense.

We want 30million according to Alex Crook on Talksport yesterday. He also said the last he heard the club's were still far apart in their valuations. That was yesterday though so lots could have changed

Surely they wouldn't be daft enough to think they knocked back around £22m from atalanta so we will go in lower

MATT O’RILEY’S record-breaking move to Brighton has moved a step closer.

SunSport told you last night that the Seagulls had moved to the front of the queue for the in-demand Celtic midfielder.

They have opened talks on a deal worth around £25million up front, but it’s thought there would also be further bonuses and a sell-on clause included in the move.

That would topple the previous highest transfer sale set when the Hoops sold Jota and Kieran Tierney, who both left for around the £25million mark.

It’s thought Brighton - bossed by 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler - are now edging towards agreeing a price with the Parkhead side, with personal terms still needing to be thrashed out after that.

If that goes to plan then O’Riley could undergo a medical before the weekend and finalise a move back to England, where he previously played for Fulham and MK Dons

Danish international O’Riley, 23, has continued to star for Celtic despite the summer saga of where he will end up next.

Serie A leaders Atalanta have had several offers booted out by Hoops bosses while Southampton also tested the water as O’Riley’s former MK gaffer Russell Martin tried to land him again.

But now their south coast rivals look to have won the race in a summer which has already seen them spend big.

They have twice broken their transfer record, first after splashing £30million for winger Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United then forking out £40million to land Leeds forward Georginio Rutter yesterday

A step closer? The only step closer we can take is accepting really.

Possibly but I do think you have to remember he's only guaranteed 8 CL games here, 10 or 12 at most really (as I couldn't see us getting past the last 16). If you are in teh PL, you have 8 games against CL teams each year anyway plus some pretty good teams with 3 additional teams in Europe, plus possible cup matches. I think a player would see more challenge in a high end league with no Europe than * league in Europe.

Yeah time to get this finalised and get his replacement in along with the other recruits we need. Also need to make sure this is the only 1st team player we lose this window.

£25m up front would be quite underwhelming. Anything under 30m would be.

Especially when you see the prices down there. So much for valuing the player and not the league.

£35million is for me only whats acceptable even if it's only in the end when they sell him.

We need to get £25million up front if not £30million, then £5million more in add ons that are near enough guarenteed then say 10% of whatever they sell him for. In the end when he leaves Brighton we need to have got £35million off them minimum for me or we look stupid.

Especially when guys like Skipp, Dewsbury-Hall, Smith-Rowe, Fabio Carvalho and McTominay are all going for about £30million on average - we need more money than those types have cost. O'Riley should really be going for £50-60million same type of fee guys like Amadou Onana, Douglas Luiz, Pedro Neto and Moussa Diaby have went for.

Brian McClair in the late 80's .. when Choccy left us for Man U I was heartbroken, absolutely idolised him at the time. If I remember right we wanted a british record transfer for him and it went to a tribunal and we only got aboot 1 mill.

Don't really expect players to hang around for too long these days so not as bad when they go. Not really invested in the same way in individuals.
