This is what I think too. McCowan is the better option at this point in time.
Miller would cost more, and he has a lack of pace, which concerns me.

Say for talkings sake we replaced O’Riley with McCowan and didn’t sign anyone else, I believe he would be fourth choice in that midfield ahead of Iwata and Holm.

My thoughts are we should sign McCowan and Engels (or someone of similar stature) it leaves us of a midfield 3 of McGregor, Hatate and Engels with Bernardo, McCowan and Iwata as backup. I think maybe you could be underrating him a little bit because of his age and where he plays his football. I think he’s a really good player and if our midfield wasn’t so stacked with quality in our starting 3, he’d be a viable starter for us. I think he’d stroll into the Rangers midfield.

Vvd became the world's best defender roughly 12 months after being * in Europe. So young guys do develop massively. Plus this year were no longer playing just pots above us. We get to play a couple of poverty teams just like us :56:

Not sure its fair to compare Scales to VVD tbh :giggle1: a very broad range of player between the two that we could bring in to improve our defence for the upcoming campaign

I won't deny, those two factors are playing a part in my mind.
I see him slotting in as you suggest in the pecking order and due to his age, not sure he's capable of stepping up to then take a starting spot.

In that regards, I'd rather the younger miller who could more realistically step it up.

If we used the transfer money to replace O’Riley and sign a left back and centre half, I wouldn’t mind. I think that then makes the squad better overall as well. It’s whether we will that’s bothering me.

Wouldn’t be totally against that either mate, although Im keen on McCowan. Kind of talked myself into it over the last week or so. I don’t think he would ever force his way in as a starter but being homegrown I think he would be a shrewd signing. We desperately need to sign one or two Scottish players.

With MOR going, we need to sign Engels as a priority.

Engels, another CM (Tessmann pls), a left back, LCB and winger.

A lot of business to do in less than two weeks.

Would agree with you in that I also thinknits too late.

Who could have forseen this happening eh! It's the fact that so much needs done in such a short space of time and as you say our board seem incapable of doing more than one deal at a time.

The funny thing is it will be to their own tight fisted detriment if we do spend as teams will now up the prices knowing we are 1. Desperate and 2. Even more flush than a week or two ago.

Just silly. Pray we can get it done though. "* willing", as Brendan said.

The two most crucial positions for me now are LCB and LB.

We just can't go into this season any further than with just Taylor for LB, it would be criminal. At this stage I would take either Doig or Beck, with Taylor rotated at LB and maybe even as an infiller in midfield, if he is not happy with that arrangement, then he should be allowed to go, no player is bigger than the club.

I'm assuming we have two midfielders already lined up, Engels and McCowan ?
Which leaves us with needing another LCB, which won't be easy to find.

He ain't daft. Those words were to appease the fans stating, aye we need more, we're trying hard, but also, to the board. Try harder and faster.

This leaving things late...its not by accident. This is our MO. They can spend hundreds of thousands, get planning permission from GCC to upgrade the stadium in weeks, get the buolders in etc. Release strips and merchandise with ease. Get Kwon at Hibs quickly, being thanked by the other club for helping.

The only thing that's slow is upgrading the squad. It's our way. It's on purpose. It's pure pish as well!

Going full Football Manager on our midfield, selling Matt, Reo and Tomoki for £40m+ and bringing in Engels, Tessman, Sanches and McCowan for £20m.

If only it was the centre back option we were doing it with punting Kobayashi, Nawrocki, Lagerbielke and possibly Welsh to bring in 2 good ones.

Wingers too punt Johnston, Yang and Palma for £7m and bring in Skov and Toure for £5-6m.

LB, a favourite for lawel in a young project striker, 1 quality midfielder.

We won't get another CB unless one leaves.

Possibly a left winger if we get rid of palma.

If we go into the UCL with Scales and Taylor again I have no hope whatsoever.

If we pull off all of the above we will be more than capable of holding our own in Europe.

It would be scandalous if we did.
