It can be both. Fully entitled to take what he’s due and I’m fully entitled to think he’s a bit of a * for doing so, even if I totally understand it.

Can only blame the board and not the player for this one. Also he was heavily involved in Giakoumakis last minute goal agaisnt St Johnstone so he gets my best wishes.

Absolute nonsense. If Celtic offered anyone on this forum £8k+ a week to kick about Lennoxtown plus gave them a free ticket to every game, there’s not one person who would knock it back. No chance.

Can’t fault McCarthy. All the best to him.

    You know this?

This was possibly his last contract in football. It was certainly his last big contract. Nobody is just walking away from that, especially at the time in his career he is at. We shouldn’t have been * daft enough to give him such a contract.

He was a good player in his prime. Wanted him here for years.

Sadly got him at the wrong time. Wish him all the best. I'd have done the same in his situation.

He made a fine contribution in his first season, a few games in the 2nd and then he's ended up with the B team, he's contributed to the club, of it was just a 2 year contract there'd be no massive hate, he'll hardly go down as a legend of the club but qeve had far worse players that have done less for us.

The problem isn't with James McCarthy, it's with the club and whoever gave him the contract.

I think we all know it had Desmond written all over it, Irish, so called Celtic minded etc, etc (ie Roy Keane).
It certainly wasn't a signing driven by our manager.

if dermot Desmond called me tomorrow and said he’d give me £100 a week to be a Celtic player but never play for 4 years I’d be there in a shot.

McCarthy is a fan….. not his fault he isn’t deemed good enough to play ahead of the other midfielders. That fan has then had years in the background enjoying the ins and outs of being at Celtic. Something we’d all dream of, never mind actually getting out on the pitch.

no bad blood to him :shamrock:

You can see both sides of this, Celtic fan been offered a really good deal.

Arrives and it doesn’t work out but being paid good money to sit on the bench.

And then fans who are frustrated due to all that money being wasted when it’s a cost of living crisis.

Not saying he isn’t a fan, but I find this whole ‘he’s a boyhood fan’ stuff tiresome, particularly when it’s someone who has come here at the tail end of his career, earning money that he wouldn’t elsewhere.

Not saying he should be facing abuse from the fans or anything, but my attitude towards him is very much more ‘don’t let the door hit you on the *’ as opposed thanking him for coming here and picking up some excellent money for doing * all.

    Very much my take too.

McCarthy came here knowing full well he was not in the best shape anymore, and we were stupid enough to give him a four year year contract to do the sweet sum of nothing.

I just get the feeling he took us all for a ride.

Didn't he want to come at 16 when he had a trial here but we didn't follow it up?

Daft giving him a four year contract, he was never going to last that long.

In a way it’s a shame because he did play a minor role in Ange’s first season and if it had been a one year deal (maybe even two) then he’d be remembered a bit more fondly.

Good player in his day, didn’t work out at his boyhood club for a number of reasons out with his overall control.

No biggy, wish him all the best for the rest of his life. He lived the dream we all wish we could have.

Bizarre signing at the time. Length of contract was ridiculous. Obviously didnt have the traits the manager wanted so he then duly declined to play him.

Reeks of someone else's appointment. Dont blame James though, id take the cash too. Seems to have been professional about it all.

What's the official line, have we paid up the remainder of his contract?
