I wouldn't go as far to say last resort or don't want to come but if we are after "quality" which Rodgers keeps telling us these players will have options.

As I've said before footballers have short careers and want to make as much money as possible, so if Celtic offer good contracts I'm sure players would have no problem coming here.. unfortunately for us most of half decent teams in Europe can beat our wage structure..

That's before that miserable * Lawwell tries to haggle with whatever club over pennies to buy him. We need to have bids accepted before we start to think about wages ha

You’re making far too much sense here.

Would you not rather just wait til the EPL teams have submitted their squads and try and loan in some cast offs?

Most of Europe can't beat us in wages.

Without checking every clubs finances, I'd hazard a strong guess that we can beat any Scandinavian club, all but 3 Dutch clubs (even then debatable on player), I'd argue all of Belgium clubs, Austrians bar maybe Salzburg, 3/4 of the french top league, 1/3 of German league 1/4 of la liga if not half, half serie A, Hungarian, Bulgarian, greek, Turkey minus the top 4, Croatian all of...

The only clubs we can't beat financially for most players is the EPL, top 1/4 of France and Spain etc.

But no one is asking for us to go sign a starting left back from psg, Lyon, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Madrid, Juventus etc.

Would be nice to go and sign a starting left back from an Austrian team, perhaps a Croatian outfit or a Scandinavian left back.

Just wait til we use the same logic in reverse and we then question why Kasper and the other keeper signed for us so "early".

    Clearly they aren't quality...

This is something that is so often overlooked.

We dwarf most of Europe when it comes to resources and wage bill, both current and potential. That includes a lot of teams in the top 5 leagues outwith England.

Because we border England, that’s the constant comparison. Our wage bill is much higher and has the potential to be higher than a lot of the teams that constantly outperform us in Europe.

Lecce * themselves laughing at us in January when they found out how much we pay Lagerbielke and pulled out the deal, for example, and he’s one of our modest earners.

    Exactly.

Clubs in these top leagues, specially ones skirting with European slots (so not your obvious last 16 UCL level clubs, Barcelona, Madrid's Juventus etc), tend to pay only 2-5 players silly wages beyond our imagination, then a handful wages on a par with McGregor and what we can and should pay some players then a good chunk of their first team squad is on a par with our majority of the squad.

Outside those European type clubs, once you get proper mid table, I think a lot of football fans would be surprised at how low the wages are.
Only the epl is on insane levels.

Edit to add an example. Bologna pay only 2 players money above what I would consider sensible for us (52k and 71k)
They pay 3 players circa what McGregor gets (31-37k). Rest of their squad is our level.

That's still alot of * clubs mate.. most English championship teams are out spending us and can offer better wages..

You're also taking out the top teams in most leagues outside the top 5 leagues..

If we can do it why are we not doing it?

Anyway we were talking about "quality" players and their options and why they leave it late in the window to sign, in my opinion it's because they have options

We also have a fairly big squad mostly filled with absolute dross earning a decent wedge doing absolutely * all.. if we cut the squad to players that actually contribute we could easily get better players on better wages...

In short out transfer policy and wage structure is * IMO

    England is a complete anomaly.

I don’t buy in to all of these quality players hanging about their current clubs until the last day of the window, holding out for the best deal either.

They are risking injuring themselves and not getting a move at all. Players want to move on quickly as well to settle in to a team and secure their financial future.

This bollocks that you have to wait ages for quality is just yet another convenient excuse.

It takes ages, and more often that not doesn’t happen because the people that run us have no ambition.

It’s taken an age to get Bernardo in the door because of the way they operate. That’s a boy that is desperate to play here, a manager who is desperate to have him, and a club that is willing to sell him, yet it’s still taken this long.

I don't know mate, I can't really explain why we are so bad at signing players other than the board are penny pinching * with no ambition and happy to just dominate Scotland, so are alot of our fans..

I'm not defending why we take so long to sign quality players just offering an opinion as to why better players would hold out for the best offer

Not worrying yet, but we are getting close to squeaky * time.

I am disappointed there's been no LB brought in, I get we're after Bruno but if it's a straight loan and Wolves have told us he's not leaving, then we should be moving on swiftly. An injury to Taylor and we're playing Ralston at LB again.

CB and Winger I think we need to shift a few players on first, we have 6 wingers and 6 CB's at the club currently, the fact Kobayashi is still here is a bit of a joke. He should have, ideally, been punted in June. Same with Johnston. Idah I think we should give until the end of next week then move on, we can't let that deal take the entire summer.

On the plus side, I'm starting to think we'll keep O'Riley this summer, closest I think we'll get is Southampton offering Shea Charles + £20 million but recent reports suggesting it'd be a loan, which wouldn't affect the O'Riley deal.

Rodgers comments are also re-assuring imo, he's not stupid, he knows the January window (In particular) was so far off it for a club of our structure. Whilst I think wholesale changes are needed upstairs for us to properly progress, I do think we'll do the business this August, but we need to get a move on.

Basically yeah. If that is our plan for this window then it's short-sighted and very risky. Personally the EPL would be one of the last places I'd be looking for players, the profusion of money down there has taken even the smallest teams away from us financially. A squad player at a club like Brentford could easily be picking-up £60,000 per week. The EPL is currently the best and richest league in the world so it's hardly surprising players are reluctant to leave that to come up here.

I know mate I wasn’t having a go, I just think deals drag on and fall apart because of the way we approach negotiations.

It’s not in a players’ interest who wants to move on to be hanging about their current club until deadline day.

We are also terrified of breaking a wage structure put in place two decades ago, despite sitting on multi millions.

I think if you seen a list of the players we’d missed out on over the last decade over a few hundred grand, it would make you spew.

Richest, aye. The best is La Liga. Think you might be watching to much Sky - they love to say their product is the "best league in the world" over a hundred times a day

Back Brendan sack the board - they are doing him dirty again maybe because they think they can get away with it this time as he won’t walk out or if he does the heat will be on him and not lawwell and co.

Hoping I get proved wrong and we actually get the quality that was talked about (in addition to Bernardo and idah) and a replacement if o’Riley goes. But let’s be honest it’s looking pretty unlikely given the ridiculous penny pinching so far for those two

If we can get Idah & Bernardo in before the weekend that would be huge.
Then we've got time for a centre back, left back & winger.
Then another forward / winger on a deadline day loan

Don't worry. We were told yesterday that Bernardo would be here in *checks notes, hours. Unclear whether this would be a few hours or a few hundred hours.

It won't be huge. It will simply mean our squad is only slightly weaker than it was when we finished the season. Yes we have time for more players to come in but we should have had players in as soon as possible after the window opened. Any players coming in will need time to get up to speed with the rest of the squad.
