Was it Southampton or Sunderland we played a few years ago pre-season?

Won't need much of a trophy room for their one FA cup. Even Pompey have more!

Mind that time they won an FA cup? Huge. Possibly bigger achievement than winning the world cup.

Not with players they fully paid for they don't. Saints also have more major league titles than Pompey, to think otherwise just shows your lack of understanding for English football structure pre-1920.

Easy to win trophies in a largely 2 horse race for 130+ years. If you uprooted Saints in the 19th century and put them in the Scottish system they'd have a few league wins over those 130 years.

You are comparing a club with 4k average attendances with a club with 30k+ average attendances! There is a vast difference between the two clubs in terms of size.

Southampton are significantly bigger than any non Old Firm team in Scotland. Put them in the Scottish league for 130 years and they'd have won the occasional league title, like the non Old Firm teams have done.

Why didn't they win in the English system? Plenty other teams have. Sure they won't now it's a 1 horse league but they've had 130 years to do it like the other 24 teams that managed it during those times. They haven't because they are a small team.

Because there is significantly more competition in England to win the league than in Scotland.

For a non Old Firm team to win the league they mainly have to just out do Celtic and Rangers. For Southampton to win the league they need to outdo... Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds etc etc. It is a significantly harder challenge.

Southampton did come close, only 3 points from winning the top flight in 1984 and have also had a number of other very high finishes in the top league.

If we had premier league money like Southampton then we still probably be looking for a wolves player on loan and haggling over the price of Idah and Bernardo.

I'd be more interested in getting our own house in order than comparing ourselves to other clubs

Probably the biggest club right on the south coast of England.

Years ago 12 teams have won in scotland. 24 in England. Again if your so big, why didn't you manage it? We're not talking modern day. If you was in the Scottish league modern day you wouldn't be getting your small 30k people watching as you'd be in a * league getting 9k people :56:

Until 2001 we were restricted due to difficulties getting a new stadium and a 15k capacity at The Dell made things difficult. Dispite that, Southampton nearly did win the league in 1984.

    Utter, utter nonsense!

Saints averaged 22k in the 3rd tier, 29k in the 2nd tier and 30k+ in the top tier. So why on earth would it drop to 9k?

Are you being serious? They had a vastly bigger income than Southampton in that season.

You also ignored the second bit.

But hey atleast you've the same amount of honours as the royal engineers :56: :56:
