Weren't you moaning that we negotiated the fee down for Bernardo?

You're * off we didn't overpay for Bernardo to get the deal done early but don't want us to pay the same price for a guy who contributed far more, if it gets the deal done?

The value for each doesn't need to be ratioed to each other.

I just want both over the line and move on to the next transfers.

It's the constant haggling that the club always does that eventually * other clubs off and makes it harder to do deals.

As has been said in here before I think we just need to go in with a final take it or leave it offer. Bid say 6.5m and tell them that’s the last bid and if they don’t accept use the 6.5m to bring in miovski

I'm not a professionally paid scout/recruitment team member with contacts to make enquiries at various clubs.
But I'm sure there are a few at the club who can do that and put the work in to find that talent.

Well as you said 100% there was better out there I imagined you'd be easily able to name them, anyone even. Oh well..

Mate we've no idea what's going on behind the scenes with these negotiations. Two clubs and players agents are involved so I'm no sure you can lay all the blame at celtics door.

Not gonna waste my time naming any names for half the forum to decide to shoot it down claiming either a player isn't worth a value or is unrealistic.

For 5-9 million, you can get much better than Idah if you look and do the job properly.

Of course it does, especially when you're contradicting yourself in different threads.

You complained we weren't getting the deal done for Bernardo when it was the easiest deal in the world to get done. Majority of the fanbase believed £6m was too much and we should try negotiate it down. That's * you off, while simultaneously being * off that we are trying to get the deal done for the striker the manager wants, at a similar price.

Every single club on planet earth is going to haggle. Even PSG are haggling with Napoli over Osmihen and Benfica over Neves. The purchasing club will always have a lower value than the club selling. It's basic negotiations.

We are literally dealing with this ourselves with Matt O'Riley. Clubs valuing him lower than we believe he's worth. It's * measuring. Every club does it.

As i said If someone is confident enough to say "100%" its fair to expect an example given that level of confidence. Not doing that, or not actually being able to do that, is indeed a waste of everyone's time.

Yea so you keep saying while not being able to provide any, credible, example.

Giakoumakis, better player and paid less.

Matias arezo - €3.5m 21 year old just transferred season 22/23 he was 23 goals in 50 games as a 19/20 year old.

    Better?

I don't think it contradicts overly. I see why it may be that, but each case should take it's own merit. Albeit we are known to be dragging and haggling where it's to our detriment - see John McGinn saga.

But the value and worth of each player is not at all in relation to the other.
6m was an agreed fee we had for Bernardo. The feeling earlier in the window was we successfully negotiated that down, that benfica was open to it, but it seems we are still nowhere near having it over the line. If we do get him for less though, that's always great.

With idah, if we can get him for 5m when they are asking for 9m, brilliant.
But that doesn't look like they are willing to budge to that degree. So the opinion on why and how we do the negotiations take a different tone and view.

The John McGinn saga is a situation in which the club gambled and lost. He's turned out far better than anyone on here could have predicted and that highlights the mistake we made in the negotiations. You win some, you lose some. Real Madrid have literally just went through this with Yoro. Man Utd agreed a £50m deal, Real Madrid refused to match it but told Yoro to wait and they would agree a smaller fee later on in the window when his parent club would be gambling on losing out altogether. The player himself decided to take the United move. Even the biggest and best clubs in the world are getting stung. It's not unique to us and never has been.

I'm not really focussing on the valuation. I'm simply saying that you're contradicting yourself when it comes to the Bernardo deal and the Idah deal, ignoring that both deals are different. Bernardo is absolutely surplus to requirements at Benfica. They have no intention of playing him and he has no future there. However, he didn't exactly set the world alight when he was here, albeit he showed some degree of promise. The fee has been agreed but I would imagine there is still negotiations taking place over the terms of that deal, the structure, the additional payments, the sell on etc. I think the club were right to try and negotiate that price down. Bernardo will more than likely be a Celtic player. Again, some people are getting mad upset because he posted a picture of him training with Benfica the day after we reportedly agreed a fee. That's why players have agents, they'll be talking to his agent about personal terms, they'll be still talking to Benfica about the overall terms of the deal. It's a process.

Idah is different. Yes, Norwich are playing their part in trying to drive up his price by spinning the narrative that he's a vital member of the team and they plan on utilising him during their season in the Championship. That may well be true, they may have seen how he performed up here and decided to try and get the best out of him but the simple reality is, he wants to move here and no club wants an unhappy player, especially when the value can depreciate very quickly. Celtic know that, Norwich know that and Idah knows that. What's going on right now is both clubs trying to see who blinks first before both clubs come back to the table and agree on a semi acceptable deal that suits both clubs. Norwich won't want this dragging on, either. They'll want the money in the bank to upgrade their squad as well. It's just complete * measuring.

That being said, I don't think we should wait forever for Idah and I do think the club should put down a take it or leabe it offer for him. Whether that's £5m, £6m or £7m isn't of any real interest to me. I just want good players in and Idah is a good player. He showed that in the 6 months he was with us. It would also be a statement of intent that the club go out and buy the player the manager wants. None of this 2nd choice, 3rd choice pish. We have waited and gotten our first choice target. It might take a couple of weeks but we will have got our managers first choice striker. It doesn't mean that we won't be working on other deals, either. We are clearly working on a CB, given we have been linked with at least 4 this window and we are clearly going to be working on a winger, with the links to Jota and Balikwisha.

Unfortunately, we need to see what other clubs do before we fully commit to moving on when it comes to specific positions. We clearly like O'Shea from Burnley. They have only just appointed a new manager was it last week? Let's see if things develop from there.

I feel we are gonna go around in circles here and end up saying and agreeing to the same thing now.

I feel we made a deal already with Bernardo, the value was €6m, yes steep on the back of his performance, but a deal we had already agreed.
If we could negotiate it down, everyone would be happy and it looked like benfica was open to that (key difference to Norwich). However the overall deal is dragging on now and that slews opinion a our the merit of however much we haggling on.

Again, Idah, you seem to now agree and on same page regarding time scales of it dragging out. I've also said we should offer whatever it is we are willing to pay and get it done sooner than later. Whatever that value is. A value I've been quite clear I don't agree with more than 5m, but if it is, get it done. If not, move on. Because personally we can get better for less. But we can't be letting this drag on all window now to eventually have to pay the 7,8,9 million at the end of the day.

Well given he left and wont be back… but to continue in the pluck a former player out of my * to prove value theme -
Larsson, better player and we paid even less. Close the thread.

That the lad from Uruguay? A player that has just completed a transfer isnt going to be sold immediately is he or does that happen on FM. His value also seems to have dropped a couple of million in a few seasons, there’ll be a reason for that i suspect.

So better ? No, not really.

I agree with basically everything you've said apart from the part where cost doesn't matter. I think Idah did more than Bernardo but not by that much. If Norwich are asking the 8 or 9 mil that's been quoted various times, by no means should we pay it. We're not in a position where we need to kowtow to unreasonable overvaluations, as Peej has said, 5 or 6 mil can get you a comparable player with good scouting.

What we should be doing is, as you've said, making a take-it-or-leave it offer, and in the meantime publicly pursue another striker. Send them a message we're willing to move on from it, show that we're aware there's comparable players for cheaper. If they're bluffing, they'll soon come to the table.

Defiantly not worth 8 or 9M, maybe 5 and a half. Surely something along the lines of MJ plus a 3M might tempt them.
The issue seems to be that their manager wants to check him out.
The clock is ticking, so we need to make an offer and set a timeline.
Regardless, we should be bringing in a third striker, preferable one that knows the SPL, like the Aberdeen boy. And again, may be a chance to offload one of our deadwoods to them.

Would be a good idea to close this thread now until it’s confirmed he is signing for us (if that happens at all) as seems just to be pointless debates now over whether he’s worth certain amounts/ranges of money or not.

I don't think Idah is worth 9 million but if he is our number 1 target and it's who the manager wants and there is clearly little if any budge in Norwich then either pay up or move on
