It's a shame the way injuries have taken a toll on his career.

He was a great player in his prime, really all action and would have been fantastic for us in the midfield had we signed him at the right time. Him and a peak Brown would have dominated the scum.

It will be interesting to see if his contract is a straight 4 years or if next season is an option. Nearly all our contracts the last year is an option, like Bitton and Rogic.

Surely that's an option both need to agree to or at least is more in the clubs favour - meaning surely to * we aren't daft enough to activate it.

If we we had that option, wouldn't he have been released by now?

Yes. He signed in July 2021. If he had agreed a 3 year deal with a year option, it would have ran out this summer. He has one year left to go on his contract.

He’s not doing anything wrong by playing out his contract, what I do find strange is his lack of desire to get out on loan at least for a guy that had some horrendous time with injuries as he wouldn’t be out of pocket.

The club are surely even best to just pay his contract up if they can’t get shot of him,

Yeah likely it would have been today, just it is unusual for us not to have the last year as an option. The club haven’t said much about anyone being released even though Siegrist said in Swiss press he has agreed a release so the fact we haven’t heard anything wouldn’t necessarily mean it hasn’t happened.

nothing funny about this naka,(unless you’re related to McCarthy), even if he was only on £20k a week, which seems unlikely coming from down south that’s £3m in wages wasted after three years, five would be horrendous

What does he do? Never seen at training, never spoken about by the manager.
Does he just sit at home and take him minimum wage?
I remember near end of last season or around time we had midfield injuries someone said he had been playing with the B team and I remember being scared as I thought maybe it was to get him fit.

    Not heard a peep since.
Can anyone say what he does day to day?

This was another non manager signing wasn't it ? If Desmond wants to buy a player let it be out of his own pocket and not the clubs

Same people that will criticise players for moving on. Tierney, Ajer etc.

Want players to be loyal but only when it suits us.

I can see Tierney’s career going the same way. Two quality players but injuries have completely ruined McCarthy, and they will do the same to Tierney. Which is exactly why we should be learning our lesson from signing McCarthy. At his peak, he is actually the type of player we need just now, but that was 8/9 years ago. He is quite right to hold out here though. This is the last good contract he is going to get in football. Possibly the last contract as a player.

Aye he's sure to retire after next season.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's announced mid season and he's paid up or something.

He was short of sharpness and fitness before he got here, three years of doing heehaw, he's gonna be worse.

If he can't get loaned out to a St Mirren while here, then he's not signing for that level after he leaves us.

His best bet is a player coach role in the Scottish championship. But honestly would expect him to retire for sure.

Not with Pedro in charge. He'll tell the coaching staff to use McCarthy instead of one of the dummies they make walls with to practice free kicks; save a bit of wear and tear on the equipment.
