Former Liverpool manager, elite level coach and legend of world football... and Jurgen Klopp.

    OK, OK, I'm sorry. I don't know what's wrong with me. :(

Glad I wasn't the only one to not know who that was.

Maybe I'm being kind, but when I heard that, I took it to mean a weird "I've made it, so I know what I'm doing" sort of weird thing.

Not that it excuses it. But it would at least explain it, as opposed to the idea it's just a loony moment.

Much like mentioned above about the Spanish being interjected to a speech, probably not remotely as random as made out.

Looked him up earlier as was trying to figure out who the Celtic player that took his place was.

Matt Mills - definite journeyman. Think Celtic player was O'Dea but bit of a guess based on being at Reading on loan in a similar time.

    Truly, a nobody then.

Aye can only be odea on loan. Same age (maybe year younger), the fact it was a loan deal suggests probably to strengthen the squad because this mills lad was *. But hey ho.

He's an interesting character, Rodgers. But I feel like so many top coaches are a strange bunch TBH (sometimes in likeable ways like Pep and Klopp and sometimes in less likeable ways, like Mourinho). Even at Celtic, the nicest people who have managed us (Ronny, Mowbray, Dr Jo and above all Tommy) were not outstanding managers and the best managers I've seen here (Ange and Rodgers) are both very unusual personalities.

Had this conversation about great players as well with my dad the other day. A lot of the greats had some strangeness to them haha

This is the case in wider life as well. Most average people are indeed average because they follow the trends to the nth degree; too uncomfortable to step outside societal norms; unable to apply disruptive thinking

It’s generally what separates ordinary and very successful in all walks of life.

I think football is quite subject to groupthink and so especially benefits the man willing to think outside the box. Somethng you'll notice about second-rate managers is that they will emulate how better teams set up rather than playing to their own strengths. I think our managers have always been quite headstrong in applying their own philosophy, for better or worse.

I'd add MON and Strachan to our list of sucessful managers who were quite eccentric. If you were to line up the managers we've had since Burns, there's a lot of characters, even by football manager standards.

By the way, anyone doubting that ex-pro's anecdotes about Brendan should just watch any video of him speaking or interacting with normal people. He is quite Brent-like in his mannerisms, there's no denying it. 100% an oddball but who cares tbh.

Think that's partly why the Lisbon Lions are revered. Sure a few who weren't quite your normal Joe, but pretty much all of them people you might have known day to day.

"Patter merchant" is what Rodgers is - long known term before Mr Brent was even thought of.

I agree with you on Strachan.

It's really hard to judge just how good a manager MON was TBH. He had extraordinary players at his disposal. Apart from Douglas in goal, did that team have a single mediocre player (let alone a poor one)? Nothing like the teams we had before and after that period.

He was clearly a good manager given his achievements; but for me, the above makes it impossible to know if he was quite as good as WGS, Ange or Rodgers.

I also don't personally find Martin O'Neill strange in the slightest. :giggle1:
I do find Strachan, Ange and Rodgers quite odd (although I love the first 2 for it).

Aye, there's definitely a quirk with him.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if he were on the spectrum - don't think I've ever seen him in an interview or whatever giving direct eye contact for more than a split second.

MON assembled, built and rebuilt that team. Gave them a real belief. Huge part of being a manager surely.

He's definitely an oddball. Have you ever heard him speak or seen him jump about like a looney :43:
