His career since and some interviews he’s done reminds of Joe Hart before he came here, Hart had the pressure internationally and at City competing for trophies and without that, he was just not the same, couldn’t adapt to just playing to get 11th rather than 10th for just nothing meaningful. Roberts immediately here thrived under that, and thrived with the pressure of a big crowd expecting and needing a player like him to do something and lost his way when it wasn’t that.

If it happened he signed permanently, then I think he’d have kicked on. But looking at his career, you’re right and my opinions supposition and hypothetical.

And I’d agree about Tierney under any circumstances that would be actually feasible with how the situation is just now with him, but I’d have had him on loan this season if it could have happened, and I think it could have if Real Sociedad didn’t come back in despite signing a left back, when that looked likely they’d moved on. It would only have ever have been a thing if it was last day of the window, and Arsenal had no other options. I’d have 100% have taken that though.

But permanently signing, this summer especially? It’s a non starter. The only other situation I’d say yes is a bosman or low fee, a pay as you pay contract and it’d only ever happen under very specific circumstances Tierney forces to happen, and accepts the terms when he could get better elsewhere and Arsenal somehow allowing it to get to a point he’s on a bosman, which they’re too well run to allow

 

For me the last season Roberts wilted a bit, but I could well be wrong and you right as I didn't see enough.

My personal theory is that Rodgers was trying to get Tierney in the summer as some sort of redemption arc. Which to me, * me off more with Rodgers because it's about him not Celtic, and it's * stupid because 1) to have only one target is insane and 2) that target to be consistently injured is just obviously an issue and 3) have no backup plan is madness.

 

He was injured a lot and wasn’t as much an impact as we’d have hoped definitely mate, but still good when he was available. Forrest at peak form and Roberts to come in is basically the peak of what I want for every position for us, we rarely have the absolute quality options, very different players but don’t care who plays because both trusted. GG and Kyogo, Matthews and Lustig might be the only other examples of that.

Aye I’m definitely on board with your thinking there, eggs in the one basket that was so * unlikely, it should have been if it can happen we’ll do it but we aren’t counting on it at all. But there was also rumours about that Merlin, who is quality apparently. Don’t know if we were aiming for absolute nonsense options, unattainable.

And you know what, we repeated that mistake in January btw, because we were absolutely wanting to go for Owen Beck, and there’s been stuff leaked out when Rodgers got told he came on for Liverpool of him being * seething. Much less unlikely option Beck tbf, but again, clearly had no other thoughts just incase.

Compare that to us missing out on first option Riley McGree, and immediately signing Matt O’Riley when we did. A * better option than the 1st was the backup.

 

KIERAN TIERNEY has backed Brendan Rodgers and John Kennedy to mastermind an epic Celtic win over Rangers.

The £25million former Celtic star and Real Sociedad loan defender will tune into the massive title showdown from his home in Donostia-San Sebastian



He’s convinced the champions couldn’t have a better managerial double act than Rodgers and No 2 Kennedy to take on Philippe Clement ’s side.

The 26-year-old, sold to Arsenal in 2019 after 170 games for Celts, told SunSport: “It promises to be an incredible match.

“I really hope for a Celtic win, but I know how difficult it is going to Ibrox. It will be even tougher without any fans.

“But they have done it before — and I’ve got every faith in them.


Brendan’s a great manager who has a fantastic derby record. He knows what it takes to win at Ibrox.

“I know how important John Kennedy is. He is an amazing coach. I’ve seen it first-hand.

“He helped me massively — and I know there are numerous other players at Celtic who will say the same.

“I don’t think the team could have two better people in charge. They will keep the players calm and focused.”

He was part of Celtic’s most famous victories, including a 5-1 at Ibrox, a 3-2 there with ten men, a 5-0 at Parkhead and a 4-0 at Hampden.

Tierney recalled: “These derby games are crazy. The 2016 defeat was a huge moment. From that Brendan came in and in the years after that Celtic won a quadruple Treble.

“I remember his team-talk before the game against Rangers at Parkhead the next season. He said, ‘Just remember how you felt after the game at Hampden’.

“My favourite win over Rangers was the one that clinched the league. We won 5-0 at Parkhead. To win the title against our biggest rivals was amazing


I’m proud of my record against Rangers. The only thing I didn’t achieve was a goal.”

Tierney has also played in the North London derby for Arsenal against Spurs, and the Basque clash between Sociedad and Atletico Bilbao


He added: “This fixture is different. The other derbies I’ve played in are special. But none of them have the same edge as Celtic v Rangers

Life in the Basque region has been the Real deal for Tierney.

And the Scotland star has revealed the last seven months on loan with Sociedad have ensured the 114-year-old club will forever have a place in his heart.

Arsenal left-back Tierney has two more months left of his stay at the club, before there’s a summer review of his future.

Among the major league fixtures still on Sociedad’s list are Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid


Tierney told SunSport: “Genuinely, not for one second have I ever regretted coming out here. Not even during my injury spells.

“I’ve loved my time out here so far, and there’s a while yet before the season ends.

“Sociedad’s a great club with amazing supporters.

“The players and staff have done so much to make sure I settled, while the physios and medical folk have been incredible


It’s such a well-run club frpm top to bottom.

“They have got so many people to help you with anything.

“Coming here is one of the best decisions I’ll ever make.

“Personally and professionally, it’s been a wonderful experience


Right at the start I was determined to learn the language, educate myself in the culture of the club and the area, and be as respectful as I could.

“Sociedad showed a lot of faith and have treated me brilliantly.

“The very least they have deserved is my best as a player, and my total commitment to adapting to the life here. On and off the park it has been fantastic. From day one, I’ve been welcomed everywhere with open arms.


The players are always laughing at my attempts to speak the language. It’s all good banter. The dressing room’s strong.

“During training there’s about ten to 15 things you need to say on the pitch and I can say all of that.

“A full-blown, in-depth conversation is where I struggle. But in general I’m able to get by.

“I’m playing for one of the best teams in La Liga. It’s a young side with plenty of home-grown players and a great head coach


I feel I can relate to a lot of players. I, too, came through the ranks at the club I was born into and grew up with.

“One million per cent, it’s a club that will always be in my heart.


I’ll always follow Sociedad, always support them — and there are people I’ll stay in touch with forever.”

Kieran Tierney would “love” to return to Celtic as Arsenal are set to listen to offers over the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Tierney would jump at the opportunity should a deal be agreed between the two clubs



The 27-year-old is surplus to requirements in Mikel Arteta’s squad and will be up for sale this summer after spending last season with Real Sociedad.



Sources say the Scottish champions are unlikely to be able to afford a permanent deal, while his “huge” wages could make a loan complicated.

However, both parties remain keen on a reunion


Tierney has struggled with well-documented injury issues since arriving in England, missing a total of 55 games while at Arsenal, as well as a further 21 during his spell in Spain.


The left-back has made 124 appearances for the Gunners since his record-breaking £25million move in 2019, lifting an FA Cup in that period.

His loan spell with Real Sociedad saw him make 26 appearances, including two in the Champions League, having previously represented Arsenal in the Europa League.



After Celtic qualified for the Champions League, Tierney’s experience in European competitions could prove valuable to Brendan Rodgers and his squad

 

I don't care about his injury record. His home cooked mums dinners will fix that. Even if he plays 50% of the season, that's * huge. Play champions league, rest let taylor play. Repeat. Bring him home. We're the one club he would take a wage cut for.

 

Wee GT is the ideal guy to fill in for KT if and when he's out injured, or even just to rotate with in general to try prevent KT breaking down. If we can make the finances work, get it * done.

Great player but I can't ignore his injury record. Was targeted a lot as well from the hatchet men. Would spend far more time out than no..

Want us to go for someone of a similar profile though. Preferably better in the air as an added bonus..

His little legs have been living on just eat n deliveroo. His mum won't allow that nonsense anyway. Jam piece for his packed lunch. Home before 3. No loitering with those London lassies till the late hours. He'll be well and truly injury free for his contract up here.

Great player if he can avoid injury, but he's another player we can't afford.

All these links to high value players is only going to lead to disappointment.

 

Can't see Arsenal agreeing a fee we could afford for a permanent deal or negotiating a wage percentage that works for a loan.

 

Unfortunately, it's a huge no for me.

I'd love nothing more for him to return but we simply cannot take the risk. Especially when he will command a huge fee and a huge set of wages. It's just not something we should even be pursuing. Let's be honest, the only reason there is any credible link is because he's a Celtic fan and he's constantly injured. It's a shame because injuries have * him and I do genuinely believe he's one of the best left backs in the world when he is fully fit and firing but that seems to be getting less and less as the years go on.

I doubt we will get a left back as good but there are so many reasons why this shouldn't be a consideration. Do some proper scouting and go find another left back.

 

Unless KT is willing to take an £80k wage drop to make a loan permanent, as well as, Arsenal willing to accept sub £10mill for him and also pay 90% of his current wage.

The celtic board ain't going anywhere near this.

As much as I would cry with joy for his return, his injury record of late is absolutely outside our risk appetite to be going and spending anything north of £10mill and the best part of any 50/50 agreement on covering wages for the loan
