That's an interesting one. I'm not even sure we can sell him this summer, his loan deal isn't up until late December. Unless we or they have a clause that can cut it short I guess.

 

Ahh ok I didn't know his loan deal was through December. No doubt the season runs on a different time scale in Brazil to what ours does. Either way the sooner we can sell him the better.

Not. a. chance.

There is a reason why the club rarely if ever releases players prematurely, in that circumstance the club is oblgated to pay out the remainder of that contact for however long it is. So why write all that off entirely if they can either sejd on loan and in part have wages paid for, or inform the player/agent that they can find another option where some other club can buy out, etc, even on a free transfer, is better than an outright immediate release where the club is liable.

It's why McCarthy (for example) hasnt gone anywhere, and is working with the youths etc, because he cannot be forced out of the club and noone is willing to pay the sort of wages that he is picking up at Celtic, so the club are using him to help elsewhere as he is still on the payroll and can be used in training capaciry etc but out of the first team picture.

In fairness, I think that was because McCarthy didn't want to go across to Greece. No doubt in my mind that we wanted him to go on loan and he refused. With someone like that, I've always felt you would be as well releasing them, with full salary paid. He's likely never to play football again and will retire next season.

With Bernabei, even though I don't rate him, he might find a team somewhere where he gets regular game time and performs well enough to earn a move. I think he wants to move on as well, so it doesn't make any sense to just release him with a full set of wages, when he's likely to continue to get loan moves.

 

That's only half of it though. If the player doesn't want to go, they can't be forced. Besides, what odds that he was going to get the sort of money he is contracted to here at Celtic? After all, he is entitled to that money so long as he fulfills the obligations required of him (be available for training and to play if selected, show up on time, don't go awol, follow the code of behaviour conduct etc), because that was the contract that he was offered, and it isn't on McCarthy that the club offered the terms that they did.

 

Not sure why the severe animosity towards him, hasn't quite cut it here and will likely move on before ever playing for us again but had a couple of decent moments, never hid while on the pitch. All the best to him
