I like him. I think he's worth the money. Probably not attractive to Lawwell as Benfica are always smart about negotiating a huge sell on percentage, meaning no big pay day for us. However, I think he has the potential to be a good player for us, so I'd sign him.

    6m is a joke. I'd take him at 3m.

    No more.

The thing is £6m in today's footballing landscape is like £3m 5 years ago. Go back further and that price drops even more and so on.

We've a very decent record of buying good players for pennies, O'Riley and Jota for example were both undervalued because of their low buy-out clauses and the fact they were still relatively unknown/unproven.

Of course the downside to this strategy is that we've become obsessed by it which has done us a lot more harm than good for at least 10 years now. But decent teams from comparable leagues are buying and selling average-good players at a much higher price now. That's why Benfica are trying to get £6m for Bernardo. The vast majority of teams from the 'Top 5' leagues wouldn't think twice about that fee.

I personally don't think Bernardo is worth £6m to us if we're going to continue being tight * and looking for gems in the biscuit tin. But let's say we had a budget of £40-50m (fantasy land I know), I'd gladly pay it.

Football has moved on. That doesn't mean we should get rinsed for average players, we still need to be smart - but £6m seems like a massive amount to Celtic fans because we've been conditioned into a poverty mindset when in reality it's nothing in 2024.

Good question, actually. It's not exactly clear what his role is when it comes to Celtic. I don't mean his designated role according to his job description, but his actual role including his influence on decisions. We've spent the entire season on here debating what he does and doesn't have a hand in.

I think he'd make a good holding player, but McGregor and Iwata are already there. Not flashy enough to replace O'Riley, even though he's physically strong, quite like Matt. I won't be raging if we sign him. But if we don't, it's not a tragedy.

There's a lot of development there.. at 22..

He's shown he can have an eye for a goal, his work ethic is excellent too. A little one paced tho.

I trust Rodgers on this one.

Not a bad player but there has to be better options out there for £6 million.

If we can negotiate a lower fee then aye.

But we shouldn't pay £6m for someone who's barely started of late. Whether or not that's "nothing" in today's market, its still only 3m less than our record buy.

Something tells me we’d be mental not to buy him. 22 and has shown, in flashes, some real ability. Stepped up in derby games and in Europe when needed. I think if he gets a proper run in the team and is asked to fill O’Riley’s boots we’ll start to see the best of him. He has a ton of potential. He’s been one of the star men for Portugal’s under 21s for years for good reason.

Step 1 of the transfer market should be signing Idah and Bernardo for 10-12 million. 100% for me. Two 22 year old players with massive potential who add a lot to the squad. Get them in. Next season could be massive for both.

£6m is alot. Can we push it to £9m for someone out of this * world? Then I'd do that.

Are we gonna go for a £3m punt instead? I'd pay the 6.

I just haven't seen anything from him so far that makes me think, yeah he's the one, just pay the money like with CCV or Jota. I think we can do better in that position for what he'd cost.

The fee is just one part of the cost involved.
Details of a contract play a role, too - for every extra 10k/week, you're adding £0.5 million and that's for each season played.
Worth bearing in mind as the fee could potentially be offset by a relatively preferential (to the Club) contract terms.

I'd very much welcome Bernardo getting signed by us.

I don't think we will pay £6m for him, I wouldn't be surprised if we try and renegotiate his fee. I don't know if Benfica would take it or just try and loan out again and hope for the sale.

Makes you then wonder what 1-3m is really like 500k-1.5m and yet that's the place we are shopping in mostly. Giving the same wages to out top earners as we did 20 years ago.

Celtics stood still, while football moved on.
Our finances are massively better now as well, revenue is 3-4x better than they was 20 years ago and we are in constant profit compared to 20 years ago.

Yet we spend less than 20 years ago and have let our wages remain at that level.

All the while everything else goes up for the fans, making the revenue income higher and better for the top brass.

Anyway that's a massive tangent, as for Bernardo, I don't think he's worth the 6m to us at present. I've more confidence in him to develop. But I think the best thing for both sides is another loan.

Won't be too upset whatever happens though with this one

If you compare the tangible contribution to the Title victory between him and Idah, comparable transfer values if the reports are to be believed, it’s night and day.

Idah has shown to be potentially worth 6 to us, Bernardo simply hasn’t. In flashes he’s shown he’s potentially a baller but those flashes are few and far between in general. He’s definitely not an MOR replacement at this point but then who is at the 6 million figure without hitting another jackpot like MOR himself.
