if you can just indulge me while I add something more, mate I don't doubt that you and Doofy are right that intention is not part of this rule; but I think it's a mistake to have rules like that (presumably in an attempt to make them more objective).
Intention is almost always relevant. Ideally, we don't want to have a 2-way split like we do now between lunging in at a cross and scoring (or in Daizen's case missing the ball, the keeper and everything else :yeltongue) on the one hand and lunging in, catching someone and getting a red on the other. It just doesn't sit right with me. Players who are acting in good faith are going to get it wrong sometimes. It should be a yellow if you miscalculate and a red if you are delibeately reckless because you don't gaf, like that De Jong one you posted.

I don't want to see VAR get involved to enforce that. It spoiled the game.

I don’t think so mate, Shawcross didn’t intend to snap Eduardo’s leg. He still did but, doesn’t matter if he meant to do it or not. Dangerous play, that snapped a leg.

Would you say not a red for that? Because he intended to win the ball, missed it and went through and snapped his leg in two?

It depends how reckless I think he's being. The difference for me is that Eduardo's leg is always going to be there and Shawcross should know that; it's unexpected for Hart's face to be as low as that IMO. I can see your point though. I often think some of the challenges against our players from guys like Lasley should be red cards because sooner or later one of our players is going to get a career ender. I don't think this was like that, but I can understand if you do.

Even if he didn't expect his face to be that low his upper chest or neck would have been. You can't stud a player with a straight leg on any part of the body. It would still be a red card no matter where the contact was made.

The St Mirren player was nowhere near the ball. Hart was always clear favourite to win that ball.

I watched it back in slow motion multiple times from multiple angles and I can't really agree, mate.

It was chest height, granted, but he didn't stud him with a straight leg (thank *!). It looks that way on a still; but the video shows that he bends his leg and twists his body to try to minimise the impact once he sees Hart.

It doesn't look like he's nowhere near the ball to me either. I'm not sure whether he would have got there without Hart's intervention, but to me it still looks close enough that players will usually go for it.

Yes, Hart is the clear favourite watching it from the angles we have; but having watched it again, I think I was misleadingly precise before. It's not just that he didn't expect Hart's face to be there; it's that IMO he didn't expect Hart to be there period. Neither of them is occupying that space when the ball is crossed. They both move forward (towards the near post) to attack that space with eyes glued on the ball.

I just imagine myself in his place and think I would have done the same as he did and also (and here I know I'm on my own), I genuinly think many (most?) players would.

‘I know by the laws of the game it’s red but it shouldn’t be it’s not a red’ might be the funniest bit of meltdown commentary ever

He had a full on meltdown after we beat Rangers 2-1 earlier in the season.

He's useless as a pundit and a commentator. When he keeps losing the plot, unable to offer a balanced view, and keeps wrongly saying officials got decisions wrong, it is time to take him off air.

He seemed to turn really bitter towards Celtic. When he joined us I think that he was continually whinging about things and seemingly PL was very "disrespectful" to him when he sent him on his way. Shortly after he signed for Rangers and was full of vengence against his old team. It's been that way since. He should never be a commentator as that was really embarrassing for him and everyone watching. Zero credibility. You have to learn to rein it in. In some ways Boyd, Lennon and Sutty have learned to do that. I see subtle differences in them all now. You can't remain in that job with any credibility if you're not willing to adjust your thinking.

I don't even mind that part, mate. I feel similarly about some of these handball penalties (i.e. that they are penalties in the current laws but that they really shouldn't be IMHO). What gets me instead is how he can watch the replays of that and not just admit he was dead wrong. That horrible thug (and he always has been a nasty piece of work) could easily have broken AJ's leg FFS. At one point he even seemed to be criticising AJ for planting his leg. Even Boyd couldn't defend him.

I normally don't like seeing a stupid person made to look a fool by a smarter person (for example Chris Sutton and Derek Johnstone a few years ago), there's something about it that makes me feel sad; but on this occasion, I loved watching McFadden taking him apart. I can't remember ever feeling as angry with a former Celtic player.

I imagine it will just be a 2-game ban and Lundstrom will be back for the cup final; but I honestly think it should be longer and his season should be over.

Aye I’m on board with the handball views. I’ve no idea what a handball is anymore tbh

Given how poor he was yesterday I would be quite happy to see Lundstrom in their starting lineup for the cup final.
