Anything down the middle is risky. It's where the keeper starts. Even diving his feet are hanging there. Its lazy. Going higher OK, less risky but still daft and cheeky.

Pick a corner. The furthest points away from any outstretched hands. It's simple and should be a gimme.

Tbh I wouldn't use Tavpen as an example, * is guaranteed a pen or two most weeks so it actually stops being a lottery for him and becomes more common practice.

Since Tavernier took his first penalty for them 29th November 2017, Celtic's record is...

    2017/18 6 out of 6
    2018/19 9 out of 13
    2019/20 6 out of 8
    2020/21 7 out of 9
    2021/22 8 out of 12
    2022/23 8 out of 11
    2023/24 9 out of 14

    TOTAL 53 out of 73, 72.6%

His record is 65 out of 80. He's scored 81.3%, on average he would have scored 6 more penalties if he took ours than we've scored.

We do have a dreadful record. Especially bad the last 3 seasons only 25 out of 37 which is 67.6%

    Roofe 4/5
    Barisic 4/5
    Defoe 3/3
    Dessers 1/1
    Itten 1/1
    Windass 1/1
    Morelos 1/2
    Arfield 0/1
    Hagi 0/1

They have also took penalties for the huns since Tavernier's first so their full record from open play is 80 out of 100 since 29th November 2017 compared to 53/73 for us, took 27 more than us scored 27 more than us which is mental.

Before the recent run though we had a run of scoring 19 out of 21 which was 90.5% so it's like a levelling out, from a mental run of 19 out of 21 to a shocking run of 53 out of 73 but the run overall of 72 out of 94 makes it 76.6% when the average penalties scored is 76%.

Before that though we scored 10 out of 17 in 2015/16 which was dreadful as well almost record breaking bad. Yet before that we also had another mental spell in 2013/14 and 2014/15 where we also scored 19 out of 21.If you include the last 3 of the 2012/13 season and the first 2 of 2015/16 we had a run of 24 out of 26 scored which was 92.6%, Commons took most of them.

We are a yo-yo team penalty wise compared to the huns we have sometimes almost 2 seasons spells of barely missing followed by 3 season spells of missing 1 out of every 3. Where as they generally score like 12 out of 15 every season.

I didn't realise Commons record was that lethal, he scored 17 out of 18 penalties for us. 94.44% he scored.

Worth noting that was the first penalty Idah has missed in his career. 15 scored, 1 missed. He should still be our penalty taker going forward.

We just need to stop coaching him on them then since whoever coaches our takers needs shot. (By someone that's he's no taught or they'd miss him anaw)

An interesting read, I do remember Commons being very good at them.

Being fair to Turnbull other than that one that hit the post against St Mirren this season, if he had hit all outs I think we would have been at worst 12 of 14, however the rest of his game didn’t merit him playing.

I am gutted Palma flopped at them as given how well he can strike a ball and his first one wasn’t far of top corner but since his have been poor. I would have never expected him to always stick to the same spot like he has.

Mooy was class last season when he was on them, I never felt he would miss. Juranovic the season before too, although Courtois did save one of his. But guys like Hatate, Oh, Jota, Kyogo and McGregor that have all had goes are far from convincing.

Idah’s at the weekend was strange having shown at Easter Road he could take one under big pressure and find a corner he scuffs it not even really down the middle. To me if your going down the middle you need to either put some pace on it which will naturally lift it or if your skillful enough panenka it.

Dembele was another you didn’t think would miss, I only recall one miss against Barcelona early on for him.

We really could be doing with bringing in someone confident at taking them. Free kicks is another thing for years there I felt like we had someone that was good for a few freekick goals but Palma has been a major disappointment in that regard.

Guys like Commons, Griffiths, Edouard, Mulgrew, Nakamura, Armstrong, Christie 19/20 and Turnbull when he first came in all found the net from freekicks pretty readily. I couldn’t tell you the last time we scored a direct freekick goal, where Tavernier again has scored a fair few this season alone. Barasic in the past also popped up with a few.

When you come up against packed defences set plays are very important to capitalise on. Corners are another area that we used to always have a big centre half that was good for 5 or 6 goals from corners now we are lucky to get 1 or 2.

This. Canny judge the guy on missing a penalty after raving about him for the last 2 weeks :56:big man’s been class so far and with backing I’m sure he’ll keep it up.

Thats the risk with a penalty down the middle. Goes in, wow. Confidence, what a player etc. Hits a foot.. Big dumpling. He struck it clean enough. I'd still have him taking the next anyway.

I genuinely don't understand how players, professional players, can take a bad penalty.

It's like when you hit the first man with a corner.

That's not a slight on Idah, that's a swipe at the entire team. Not one player has made penalties their own.

He absolutely should remain our penalty taker, you’re allowed to miss 1.

I like him and he gives us a different option to Kyogo, but he had a poor game today. Rightly hooked as he was fluffing his chances again. Livi are the exact team folk mention when we mention a need for a more physical player like him too.

A very telling inexperienced performance, he’s a back up striker who needs to find consistency in his game. Potential is there but I’d like to see Oh given a better chance as well.

He's a different option, but he's clearly very limited

Hes a confidence player and that penalty shattered it. Still think he's got something though.

He's done better than I expected but nowhere near the level we need to push on.
