The first one is a LOT of world building and exposition (and it is a long * movie as well, so to say the least there is a LOT of set up going on... and am familiar with the first 3 books - albeit 30-odd years ago, oh, and the David Lynch version from 40-odd years ago :p ), so am curious myself to see if the second one works independantly or not.

I’m choking to see that Ricky Stanicky film, feels like the sort of comedy I grew up with that just dont get made anymore

Infact any comedies don’t really get made anymore. Humours just shoehorned into Comic Book films.

Sadly, this is so true. Precious few and far between, and especially good ones.

Think while it’s always been a thing in Hollywood there’s a thing now that you’re either giant interconnected and frankly by now exhausting franchise or an attempt at having one, a sequel or the rare story that is arty and has a message doesn’t matter the message. Just that there’s one presented in an up itself manner.

I want space to be leftover for the irreverent funny as * couple hours you sit down to and end up exhausted for laughing. They were everywhere from late 90’s early 2010’s and then it stopped. Can’t remember an example of one since Hangover 3 I think.

    100% agree.

For the studio execs, having a known IP means you're already having a baked in audience, rather than having to go and find one. There are a lot of reasons why this has happened and why it has worked, but there was always going to be a very real downside to all of this and that is what we are seeing now. Fan exhaustion, tired properties, creative bankrupcy and so many square pegs shoved into round roles that it has all become same.

Fresh new ideas are discarded, maybe a scene here or a joke there are cherrypicked to be used elsewhere, and once in a while an entire story will get shoehorned into making whatever a big franchise needs. Only it's not that entire story anymore, because it has had to discard everything that doesn't fit in with whatever these franchise's need is, and like bohemoth vampires living off the life blood of creativity and fresh ideas to keep these living dead franchises afloat, they are twisted and unrecognisable from the original story that was written.

It means losing original characters that the story was created for are lost, so that it now has to fit Captain Marvel or whatever the * Vin Diesel's character is in the Fast & Furious franchise etc can live. It means sacrificing originality because it's too much of a risk. 'The Creator' was at the cinema a few months ago, and it has original and interesting ideas, filled with some pretty cool world building... and it flopped, because audiences have been trained to go to what they know.

Couple with the impact that streaming has had on the industry, but sadly genres like comedy, that are relatively cheap to make have suffered because of all of this, and even things that get billed as being a comedy nowadays very rarely actually are all that funny.

Nowadays, any film has to claim it has 6 laughs in it to be considered a comedy. Six laughs. That's it. Any film that can provide 6 laughs is an action comedy, dramedy, romcom (and even those are fewer and fewer), whatever. It's not exactly a high bar... and yet, wow, it's spectacular how few even manage to achieve even that. In a 90 minute movie, 6 laughs equates to one every 15 minutes. Yes, I get that is the bare minimum, but ffs, that is sad.

Part 2 is more or less a direct continuation of Part 1, so you definitely need to see it before. It doesn’t work as a standalone film.

As Taz says it’s a slow burn and very much a world-builder. I loved it, but I know people who didn’t like the pacing.

Just tried to watch Tenet. Got over halfway through and turned it off. First time I’ve done that in years.

Absolute *. Nolan’s filmography is almost flawless, so it’s so surprising he’s directed that pish.

Watched Ferrari despite mixed reviews. Really enjoyed it. Driver and Cruz were great in it and the story skipped along. Most Michael Mann movies take at least 2 watches and I think he is going to release a directors cut at some point.

Watched TMNT: Mutant Mayhem last night for a bit of craic.

Really like the animation style of the Spider-verse films, so knew I’d like it here. But the soundtrack for me stood out the most it’s unreal, good wee easy watch tbh.

Some of the story lines and references were a bit naff, but laughed a good few times.

    Dune Part Two

I'm guessing the visuals is what is getting people all over with this, and while I liked it well enough, there are times when it felt more like like a checklist; the sci-fi 12 tasks of Hercules, so to speak. Even as a decent adaptation (although I'm pretty sure it omitted all of the mentats entirely in this one), it's still only half a movie, and didn't find the soundscaping anywhere near as good as in the first film - then again I know im in the minority here.

    Lisa Frankenstein

It's a shame that this movie is getting pretty much completely overlooked at the moment, because it's actually a pretty funny movie. A horror comedy directorial debut from Zelda Williams (Robin Williams' daughter) that feels like a blend of late 80s/early 90s Tim Burton and Heathers, with a cool soundtrack (Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies etc). Hopefully it does find it's audience, because it deserves to. Has cult classic written all over this!

    Wicked Little Letters

Not a bad yarn abou8t a little remembered true story from the early 1920's. There is a smattering of humour, although not nearly as much as you'd expect given the premise, but it's the performances, especially from Jessie Buckley, Olivia Coleman and Timothy Spall that really catch fire here.

Dune 2 disappointed felt rushed wasn't even 9 months from landing on arrakis till the end of the story i also didn't like the way they switched Channi and Stilgars belief in
Paul .Strange to say i liked it as a film but after the first part being so faithful to the books i was disappointed with the way they had the ending how quickly did the Landsraad get there after the Harkonnen sent the message ?where was the spacing guild ? The Freman on the ships how are they going to get anywhere without the spacing guild

Maybe they'll have all that in the directors cut that plays for about 12 hours....

I have no doubt if you've read the books you'd always be left a bit wanting. However us who are lazy and don't read its ace :56:

I get that they couldn't fit the whole book in it would be about 36 hours long but its just some of the stuff they missed like mentats, spacing guild and as i said the pacing was a bit off for me the 2 films take place in under 9 months as his sister hasn't been born yet (another missing piece but i get why a 2 year old who can walk talk fight like a normal person is left out ) just seems to rush the timeline
