Agreed with this, he has shown some glimpses of a decent player but he needs to do it on a more consistent basis if we are to consider making the move permanent. Amongst everyone else, he was very poor yesterday. In games like that we need a player that can make a real difference, Bernardo has certainly done that before but it needs to be more regular if he wants that permanent move

I disagree. Hatate loses the ball pretty often. Has a bit more of a burst of energy about him than Bernardo, but his use of the ball is pretty far behind Paulo’s.

Felt like he made zero impact on the game today.

Respectfully disagree, for me was best of the midfield 3 in first half. Although that wasn't hard.
Took him off first today because BR too scared to sub Calmac or Matt.

Dunno how he was taken off before O' Riley or Mcgregor. Both worse than him today.

The middle 3 were all *. I'm still not in the sign him up camp and it's not just off the back off today he was playing well for a month and the break was within that month as well

Always thought the calls to sign him permanently were premature. Needs to show more before we should part with that kind of fee. I feel that he is too similar to O’Riley in style.

Benfica boss Roger Schmidt has hinted Paulo Bernardo may fancy a Celtic stay beyond his loan spell this summer.

The Portuguese midfielder, 22, has found form at Parkhead since arriving until the end of the season and has managed 18 appearances in all competitions this term so far. The player always has the option of continuing his Hoops career on a permanent basis and we at Football Scotland exclusively revealed to you the £6million release clause Bernardo has on his deal with the Eagles.

Now manager Schmidt has addressed speculation directly and admitted that while the initial plan started off with the loan being suitable for both parties on the short-term, it depends on how Bernardo feels about his time in Glasgow.

You have to remember it's also about the will of the player and what he wants to do," he said. "With all the players who leave Benfica, the idea is to give them the opportunity to develop and gain confidence. And of course, it's always an excellent opportunity for Benfica to watch them. The aim is to have a good overview of all the players

Agree with the comments a vice and still need convincing he is worth the money quoted. He showed at the end of December what he is capable of and being honest he should have had a goal in each of the last two games again.

There is a bit of me that thinks him and O’Riley are too similar to play in the same midfield with McGregor. They are both excellent off the ball, but lack that burst of pace and top level stamina. Both are capable of being creative and scoring but they are not really playmakers more good at connecting with teammates and interchanging passes.

I remember discussing it in the summer but a midfielder more like Hatate as a plan b for when he’s not playing is what we miss domestically. Someone with that high energy and ability to create something for himself or a team mate. It was evident when he got injured last year too under Ange. This is really a domestic observation as we lack both that and physicality in there for Europe.

O’Riley will be off in the summer, he’s the natural replacement for O’Riley and hopefully develops further to be sold off down south in a year or two’s time.

Turnball is gone and with a decent chance of O'Riley I would prefer Bernardo than whoever the board might let BR sign

What remotely makes you think BR is signing players? :56:
He left the last time because he wasn't getting his players and it's the same this time again.

I agree O’Riley will go in the summer and I do think Bernardo is similar but see before we go and shell £5-6m and probably agree a massive sell on to Benfica again I would like us to actually properly do our homework.

Jota going for £25m wasn’t good transfer planning or a masterstroke it was very fortunate that a Saudi team came for him in terms of us selling him. If he had went anywhere else we wouldn’t have got that sort of fee for him.

Agreeing to these massive sell ons makes it difficult for us to make big money on sales, add to the fact we hardly ever produce any of our own good players anymore doesn’t help either in that sense.

When O’Riley does go I think we need to take the chance to look at the balance of our midfield. Turnbull is off now so that’s one body down, but I think too many players we have are all of the same style.

They are all fairly good on the ball but without having that real creativity, decent ball winners but none of them great positionally in terms of screening a defence, none of them have high levels of athleticism, none of them carry a consistent goal threat from around 20-30 yards out and none of them are strong runners, ball carriers, another thing is most of them look poor on their weaker foot (bar Hatate).

McGregor, O’Riley, Bernardo and Holm to me all look to have similar strenghs and weaknesses.

Surprising Kwon in his St Mirren performances seems to have him more as an all round centre midfielder too rather than an out an out defensive midfielder.

Iwata is more deep lying but you feel he has the tools to do more than he has shown so far.

That only leaves Hatate who I would argue is our only real creative spark in the middle of park and when he isn’t there we sorely miss him, especially after losing Mooy in the summer.

For me we need to move some of the above on our loan out Kwon (again) and Holm in the summer and bring in a proper enforcer type, someone with real drive and energy to go box to box and a creative playmaker type.

Agree with all of that bud but I’m not gonna write kwon off yet. If he keeps performing for st mirren as he is and develops into a better player from where he is now we should definitely give him a chance rather than loan him out again

Think what you write there is fair. The only thing I would disagree with is that if Jota continued his performances, especially at CL level, then I could have see him going to a PL club, even they pay £20m plus for what they need. That’s if Brendan didn’t crush his form too.

Until a few weeks ago, as was hoping we could send Bernado back early.

Then he seemed to be the player we all hoped he'd be.

On Saturday he was *. Perhaps not the worst on that day. Let's just hope that never again will so many players perform so badly in the one game.

Not writing him off but I can’t see by the summer he is ready to play week in week out for us. I hope I am wrong but I wouldn’t be against him staying at St Mirren until January at least.

Obviously if he goes wild and totally bosses it between now and the end of the season then we need to look at that.

Or send him up to Aberdeen with Robinson when he gets the job in the summer

Thought the change in opinion on him after a couple of, granted superb, performances was premature.

He still drifts a lot for me and he still doesn’t have a defined role or even an apparent actual position.

However, the couple of games did show he has genuine ability and potential. We could really be doing with him putting in those types of performances starting tomorrow.
