Chris Sutton on Adam Idah's potential Celtic loan move

I'm a fan of Adam Idah but, like many Norwich City supporters, have been frustrated by his inability to take his opportunities at the club.

There is no way to describe the last few years for Idah other than disappointing. He burst onto the scene with a hat trick against Preston North End. I was on Final Score that day, and I remember thinking, 'Here we go'. I suspect other Norwich fans thought the same.

He looked like he was going to be the latest academy talent off the conveyor belt and would go on to bigger and better things. Sometimes, it doesn't work for certain players at certain clubs. It was the same for me at Chelsea - it is frustrating and impossible to put your finger on.

Idah has had long enough to prove himself, especially at Championship level, and I think the team would have wanted more from him. Sadly, it feels like we've reached the end of the road.

If they get a replacement, then I believe it is a move that is best for all parties. He has had enough opportunities to prove himself at Norwich, and it hasn't quite happened.

Maybe he needs a fresh start and challenge. We can talk about his development, but he has had opportunities - it's a ruthless game, and he has failed to grab them with both hands when they have been offered.

Take Jonny Rowe as an example; he has cracked on and taken his chance. Idah has had numerous opportunities and played over 100 times for Norwich, and he just hasn't done enough.

I've done so many columns on Idah over the years. He has so much going for him; he's strong, quick and has a great physical profile, but it always feels like he could give more. He doesn't throw his weight around enough.

He is a confidence player and he is lacking that. He's just been a bit hesitant on the pitch. If they get an adequate replacement. I'm not sure many Norwich City fans would struggle to disagree with the decision to let him go.

Both parties will likely feel dissatisfied with how it has gone, but there does come a time when he's had enough opportunities, and he's not made it happen for himself. Now Josh Sargent is back, he is going to be Norwich's number one striker.

The fact he can't oust an ageing Ashley Barnes must be a major disappointment to him. But he isn't getting ahead of him for a reason and that's because he hasn't kicked on in the way everyone hoped.

As for the fee, that is always going to be debated because of the inflated market, but that does feel on the light side, given he's 11 months into a five-year contract and his age.

If they can get a deal sorted, all parties should shake hands, wish each other well and move on. Celtic is going to be a very difficult and different experience for him, if that gets finalised. You have to robust mentally to cope with life in Glasgow.

My fear is that Idah will struggle to displace Celtic’s other strikers and isn’t any better than Oh Hyeon-gyu. He is a development player and I’m not sure that is what Celtic need either right now. I really hope he knows what he is getting himself into…

Doesn’t get the green light until SVJ is tied up so he’s not yet. But he will.

He's very passive.. strikes me as a player who never looks like scoring and doesn't think he should be there. When it comes together for him he is fairly decent.. I hope I'm wrong about him.. no doubt he has talent, if he caught fire with us he could run amok at spl level.

Not sure what parts yours or kds poster, but regardless its pish, and a lot of it.

According to stats Watkins had a 1 in 3 or better at every club he was at. So * that has in comparison to this guy I'll never know.

Not to derail the thread but Watkins scored 33 in 133 in his previous 3 seasons (2 seasons in the championship, 1 in league 2) before his breakout 26 in 50 season for Brentford.

Celtic have agreed a deal with Norwich City to sign striker Adam Idah and he is undergoing a medical in London on Wednesday, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the 22-year-old has already started medical tests ahead of his loan move to Parkhead.

The hoops and the Canaries have reached a full agreement which will see the Republic of Ireland international join for the remainder of the season.

Well-placed sources told Football Insider that Idah is keen on a switch to the Scottish lead leaders this month.

Football Insider revealed (31 January) that further negotiations took place overnight regarding the forward, but now a deal has been completed.

Idah has had a successful first half of the season for David Wagner’s side, scoring seven goals and providing one assist across 34 appearances in all competitions.

His move away from Carrow Road will be the first time the academy graduate has ever played for another side

The Hoops had been keen to add to their attack following the signing of Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna for a reported £3million earlier this month.

Idah has been a regular for the Republic of Ireland senior side since his debut in 2022 and has scored twice across 20 appearances.

I think sinclair Armstrong the Ireland u21 is more that type that plays for QPR but with him again his goal record isn’t great. This is his first season starting regularly in championship though. I’m probably less impressed with idah than I have been with sinclair btw :giggle1:

Watkins, before his major season at Brentford had a less than 1 in 4 record. He scored 26 goals the season before he signed for Aston Villa.

He spent 2 seasons with Brentford before that, where he scored 23 goals in 96 games. He then scored 26 goals in his final season with Brentford, which took his goalscoring record to 49 goals in 143 games.

If Idah scored 20 odd goals for Norwich this season, he'd likely be going to the Premier League. We are halfway through the season and he's scored 7 goals, which isn't good enough but he has only started 15 games for them. It's not a horrendous record when you take into account he's only 22 years old, he's been playing at the higher end of the Championship/Premier League for his whole career.

I think the team has to be taken into consideration as well. Brentford were relentless attacking wise. Especially in the championship. Norwich have and always will be a more defensive side. They have been for years. If Idah moved to someone like Ipswich in January(I know that would never happen), who aren't one of the big teams who got relegated(Southampton,Leeds,Leicester), he would score far more.

I get why people are * off and I think the price is far too high to make it permanent at £6.8m, and giving the lad 6 months to justify a price tag, which would be the 3rd highest in our history, is a bit mental. I still don't think the overreaction to it is fully warranted.

Good luck to the guy if he does sign. Just hope he avoids all the social media comment sections ... or it makes him determind to prove people wrong.

Usually don't mind that, if it's a higher calibre of player. This just seems like a waste of time on our side.

Pretty much, we lose either way now. He’s rubbish we lose out as he isn’t what we expected, he’s amazing and finds form, we lose out cause he’s sent back with an inflated price tag
