I always blame the booze myself! Nae worries, I'm 52 and come from a generation that knew it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

Good luck with WW3 and the new generation though!

I used to think some of the criticism PL got years ago from some supporters was well over the top however, loosing the ten drastically changed my mind. My opinion of him got worse over the years as I watched our sub - standard performances in Europe continue without any real sign of improvement to strengthen the team and here I am today watching yet another transfer window drift bye without any real movement from our club to sign the players we all know we need. So, if we do loose the league this year I think I will really question if my state pension should be spent on a ST money that will just sit gathering dust along will all the other millions.

Yeah, football fans saying SACK THE BOARD has always been a pretty meaningless gesture, even in the 90s it's not like we got rid of the old lot through fan pressure alone, someone still had to come along and buy them out.

    Exactly.

And back then it's not like the Kellys, White's and the Old Board were in a position of strength back then ei. The club was scrambling to stay alive, were not exactly dominating on the pitch having finished 5th in 89/90, joint 3rd in 90/91, and 3rd in both 91/92 & 92/93 and 4th in 93/94 (it was March 1994 when the 'Rebels' won), a grand total of ZER) silverware across all those seasons, the players were still training at the own Barrowfield (and having to go to CP to change in the dressing room there then go to Barrowfield for training then come back to the old stadium - which needed serious work done on it - to the point where serious discussions were being made about relocating the club to Cambuslang instead), had barely a bean left in the biscuit tin and it was an era in which the concept of ST money was practically unheard of across a lot of British football and didn't have a bank beating at the door with notice of calling in the recievers and looking to forclose on the club entirely.

Compared to now, where it's entirely the opposite - 11 league titles in 12 years, 5 trebles in the past 7 seasons, the biggest bank balance and cash reserve in the club (and Scottish Football's) entire history, developed Lennoxtown and currently redeveloping Barrowfield), beautification projects around the stadium (which was built in the post-Rebels era), the biggest self-sustainable operating budget, and more besides...

Oh, and let's not forget that while Celtic is now a publicly traded entity on the stock exhange, between Desmond & the current Board, who either own or control via proxy roughly 48.2% of all those stocks. Last I checked (a few years ago now admittedly) but there were 7 or 8 others that possess 2% or more shareholding and that literally if even a single one of those sided with DD & the Board, it instantly would make any move to remove the Board lawfully and legally impossible.

Even if there are those on here or in the stands are not interested in balances and cash reserves et al, beyond the potential to use that for player transfers etc, the truth is considering the type of people that have that sort of holding in their portfolio are very much interested in the balance sheet every bit as much as they are in the on-field success - not to mention would not be looking to make an enemy of someone like Dermot Desmond when they have so many other external business dealings - it does make all this noise and rhetoric of 'hounding people out of the club' pretty hollow.

Whether anyone here likes it or not, that's the reality.

See looking back on it only thing board we’re guilty of was holding on to control for so long and probs not investing as much when Celtic was at its height european wise …. I’d say the blame lie more at bank of Scotland and Gavin masterton rangers had a five million pound deal bet draft Celtic had 1 million …. Who do you think the bank tried to shut down and had been putting pressure on for months

Not disputing that. These sorts of dealings that Masterton had with Minty Moonbeams and allowing exponential lending to MIH on a wider scope lead to nearly £1bn (tht's billion with a B) debt which, when 2008 hit put BoS in biggg trouble, leading to them being taken over by Lloyds.

Masterton has a lot to answer for, not simply for playing favourites with R****** but indeed with Dunfermline also, and ultimately for being a banker going bankrupt is an ignominy and loss of credibility there is no hiding from.

As the money that was around back during the Stein era, when Celtic were there and thereabouts, and the wider European Cup-era is not a drop of what the Champions League is, with the group stage format that has only further centralized dominance and wealth in the favour of the old G14 clubs at it's outset and has largely continued to do so, 30-odd years later.

Even still, setting that aside, there was undoubtedly a lot of wrong steps taken by the Kellys and Whites in the later 70s and throughout the 80's that made the situation far, far worse than it should've been. It put the club in peril in the first place and allowed for the BoS (and Masterton's) potential whims to threaten it's existence.

There was undoubtedly resting on laurels from the Old Board, but failing to adequately persue commecial support and sponsorship deals, the change sparked by the sale of Dalglish that in many was itself a turning point (there is a lot more to that particular transfer than that oversimplification but it was a turning point none the less), the closed shop and general biscuit tin mentality and intransigence to move with the times - such as 1950's thinking in a 1980's world - all played their part. But there is more also.

Even things like matters beyond the control of the club, such as the findings of the Taylor Report in the wake of Hillborough Disaster, meaning refurbishing CP was not just amatter of a few upgrades and licks of paint needed, but ultimately a major, major redesign, rehaul and rebuild, so say goodbye to the old Jungle and the dawn of all-seater was coming fast.

    ****

Anyhow, this is getting away from the topic of the thread. It was not my intent to go down the rbbit hole of the wrongs of the Old Board, rather was using it to compare and contrast with the situation we are in now and how completely unrelated and different they are, that the perfect storm that the club was in prior to Fergus McCann really bares no resemblence to the ire that some disgruntled fans may have, rightly or wrongly, towards the current powers at the club.
