Aye, can't see us ever having that many chances in a CL game again.

He has stabilized the situation, in what seemed to be a spiral to collapse. Proven me wrong. Now, he has to do the annoyingly hard task of prying money from the board's hands.

The way Rodgers set up will see us have more success long term than Anges style. IMO.

Personally, I'm not going to prejudge whether they are his signings or not. I'll base that on what he says about them, how happy he looks, probably also the league too and, most importantly, whether he actually bleeping plays them!

And most importantly if he throws them under the bus or not :86:

Sadly, I think if he feels he needs to, he'll throw them under the bus whether they're his signings or not. I've defended Rodgers a lot on here, because I really do think he's a good manager overall; but he has done that a couple of times already this season and it's not good man management.

I agree its not good man management, having said that I could/can accept a coach manager occasionally throwing players under the bus, if its because the coach manager is simply * of with the players and his emotions get the better of him during an interview but in rodgers case its simply about protecting/deflecting from him than anything else.

And the timing. That one where we went out of the CL and he basically came out and implied that the players weren't good enough at that level. The players must have been so down after losing the match, exiting Europe and then they have to hear that from their manager. It doesn't matter that it was true.

Listen to Ange after Spurs lost last week. It's night and day.

    Suppose.

I jusr think Anges gung ho style would never have worked with the players we have.

We need to be more pragmatic. I don't think we got cut open quite so easily this season, Atletico away aside. A fair few of the goals we conceded were as a result of the usual inexperience and individual mistakes that seem to curse every celtic manager!

I think the transfer record, here at least, is difficult to judge as I believe during his last spell he was presented with a lot of 5th choice down the page, type signings.

His comments on Shved suggested as much and he's more or less said (perhaps in not the exact words) that he is back to see us invest more than last time and try and make a mark in Europe. I think it's quite clear that our tight approach to recruitment was an issue the last time. We will never really know what players he wanted and who he got landed with instead, but if you see some of the dross we signed i honestly don't think he pinpointed those players. Big part of why our football declined under him last time was the recruitment. Kept relying on the same players as those signed weren't of the standard needed. I don't blame him entirely.

I will lay blame at his feet for trusting Congerton and Hammond though. I worry that Lawwell jnr may have a similar impact on us. Intact, he already is.

I mean neither styles actually worked with the players we have. We need more quality to compete at that level, that much is clear. I think Ange style could have given success with some better players, just like Rodgers style might.

I hope Rodgers style brings amazing success ofc, if it does it'll mean we have more quality in the squad.

I don’t think so, as long as Ange kept getting supported and making the signings, I think it would eventually have paid off!

Would have loved 1 more season but hopefully Rodgers can keep us progressing in Europe!

Brendan Rodgers says he would like to get his transfer business done early this month, but he used the example of when Celtic missed out on the signing of Declan Rice to exemplify that supporters may need a degree of patience during the January window.

The Celtic manager has revealed that the club were close to securing the services of the now £100m Arsenal and England midfielder during his first spell in charge, only for injuries at West Ham to open up an opportunity for him there, which he seized.

Rodgers says then that both he and the club will be pushing to get the ‘quality’ he has long demanded in as soon as they possibly can, but as the example of Rice shows, that is not always in their hands.

“The club will do absolutely everything we can to support what we need and what the team needs,” Rodgers said.

“There is lots of work going on in the background, and I’m pretty sure that in this early period of the month, we can have some joy and get one or two in.

“Ideally you’d want to get them in [early]. Deals can be complicated and things that might have been there for three or four months can fall away.

“That’s always the challenge - it only takes one injury to [change the situation around] with a player who was lined up to come in.

“I remember when I was here the first time, we spent about three months looking for Declan Rice to come in. Declan was all set to come in and then all of a sudden, they had an injury, he stayed and got in the team and the rest is history.

“That’s not the club’s fault - it’s just the way it goes. We have a number of positions we want to prioritise; there are other positions where we won’t be able to do anything until the summer, I know that.

“But what I do know is that we want to improve the squad and the club are very happy to support that.”

In order to bring in the profile of player he wants, Rodgers knows he will have to allow others to leave the club this month, but he says he has always been up front with his squad men about their future – or lack of one – at Celtic.

“It’s the hardship of the job - it’s one of the tough moments that you have - but I always think you’re better being clear with the players and where he stands,” he said.

“It’s a challenge because you know that sometimes a player will leave here and he won’t have similar conditions again at his next club.

“But you have to do it for the greater good of the team, the club and for the player himself. It’s a side of the job that is a challenge, especially when players are so honest and they are on the way up. But the reality is, as a manager, that’s what you get paid to do.

“I have regular dialogue with players but still we obviously have to wait and see as well because some players may want to go out, but if we don’t get the players in that we need, then I have to ensure the squad is as strong as it possibly can be for the second part of the season.

“So there’s that management side to it as well. You have to [allow some to leave] for multiple reasons.

“For the players themselves and for their football careers, they need to play. For financial reasons, you can’t be carrying numbers of players each month who aren’t contributing.

“It then allows us the opportunity to bring players in. That’s just a natural process.”

Brendan Rodgers insists he’s learned to take nothing for granted in the January transfer market – after being on the brink of bringing Declan Rice to Celtic during his first term in charge.

In a sensational revelation, the Celtic boss has told how close he came to landing the £105million Arsenal man for a bargain-basement fee at a time when Rice was struggling to make the big breakthrough as a youngster at West Ham. And Rodgers admits the experience of getting his fingers burned on that occasion has made him cautious of getting his hopes up as he attempts to bring in “quality” reinforcements during the winter window.

Rodgers has spoken repeatedly of the need to strengthen his starting XI throughout a testing first six months back at the helm. But when asked if deals for some of his top targets are close to being completed early in the New Year, he said: “Ideally you’d want to get them in early. Deals can be complicated and things that might have been almost there for three or four months can fall away.

“That’s always the challenge – it only takes one injury to change the situation with a player who was lined up to come in. I remember when I was here the first time, we spent about three months looking for Declan Rice to come in. Declan was all set to come in and then all of a sudden they had an injury, he stayed and got in the team and the rest is history.”

Rice established himself as a top-team regular with the Hammers at the start of season 2017/18. He quickly became a stalwart in the east end of London and broke into the England set-up before sealing a record-breaking move to the Emirates under Mikel Arteta in the summer.

Now Rodgers is hoping to get his hands on the next big thing as he plots for the second half of his first season back in Scottish football. But, while he is closing in on a number of new signings this month, he accepts he won’t be able to complete his planned rebuild until the market opens back up for business again in the summer.

Rodgers said: “We have a number of positions we want to prioritise and there are other positions where we won’t be able to do anything until the summer.”

Nothing new here, just the usual challenges every club faces in January. As hard as it is for some to accept, we need a bit of luck on our side to have a successful window, as things don't just happen as and when we want them to.

Still, it's a good way to get folk raging going to bed :giggle1:

    Interesting point about summer.

Reckon we won't get a new GK till then.
