He said he wanted a goalscoring striker and inferred that Van Hoijdonk isn't one, when he has a history of most certainly being one barring his most recent move. That's the first thing I found weird.

In terms of the dessers example I think it's a weird argument to use, just because the Huns have signed a striker who's jumped about clubs for ages and hasn't quite hit the heights doesn't instantly mean this guy would be the same becayse they happened to play in the same league. I'd rather we sign strikers with a 1 in 2 record than not. As has already been pointed out Dessers record wasn't even as good, anyway!

That's the very definition of a goalscoring striker. So I suppose if we are linked with someone from the Austrian league with a 1 in 2 record we should jusr say "well so did Sebo".

I think it's a lazy argument people so often make. Fact remains they're a goalscorer before coming here. Any transfer comes with risk.

I’m only saying that if someone uses goals in a league as positive evidence for a player, then saying another player also scored in that league is perfectly valid data for a discussion, since it is an indicator of the quality of the league and how difficult it is to score.

Everything you’ve said above is valid counter arguments to that discussion which I would probably agree with.

But calling it a weird argument when it’s actually a perfectly normal point to make is wrong.

It's not a perfectly normal point to make though.

Firstly, there will be players playing in the Eredivisie right now who haven't done a thing, who we would all be buzzing to sign. Secondly, using a * player and his goal scoring record in a specific league, to downgrade the goal scoring records of another individual, without a shred of context is extremely strange.

Would love to sign him up. I'd give him a peasants wage of 7K a week...

Kris Boyd outscored Henrik Larsson in Scotland.

    Exactly, mate.

There are multiple different examples of certain, shiter players out scoring extremely talented players in similar leagues.

A guy with a 1 in 2 record in the 7th best league in Europe isnt doing too badly. Especially when he’s outside of the traditional big 4 in PSV, Ajax, AZ and Feyenoord.

The wider point is, if you’re wanting an “out and out goal scorer”… how else are you meant to gauge that if you’re not taking the goals into consideration. :56:

Looks pretty decent to me considering the clubs he played for aren’t exactly dominant

Still did. Still a tiny fraction of the player Larsson was. It’s why the comparisons are daft.

Boyd played more than double the amount of games Larsson did, and the fat * wasn’t good enough to wash Larsson’s boots. Just for context.

What's he done though to validate at least a £4.25m increase, he's been pish for them, 1 season in Holland. Their Captain who's taken the league by storm hasn't even made that kind of increase.

Just think it's a big risk on spending in the region of £5m or more when there's better in our own league for less. Guess it's the foreign name that makes it ok and where he plays.

Why are we even considering this guy or the Dane when Miovski is a no brainer...

If it was a loan to buy then I'd be up for it, but £4m up front would be a bit much.

Who's better in our league and available for £4m? Last I heard, Aberdeen wanted £5.5m for Miovski and Shankland won't go for cheap either and I absolutely doubt he would come here.

Also, saying "1 season in Holland" isn't accurate either. He had less than a year on his contract when he signed for Bologna and he was only 20 years old, which is why he was only £750k. He also had an incredibly good record in the Dutch 2nd division with NAC as a young teenager. For context, he had more goals in 50 games with Herenveen over a season and a half loan than he did with NAC Breda as their main striker. So, the reason in his value increasing is because he has showed in an 18 month spell with a decent Dutch team that he can score goals and provide assists in a top league, outside of the big 4. He outscored every single player from the big 4, apart from Xavi Simons at PSV.

I don't actually think we should buy him right now, anyway. We should loan him in with an option to buy. Bologna would accept £4m for him, no doubt about it. Motta doesn't want him. If he comes here for the second half of the season and bangs in 10-15 goals, you pay the cash for him. A LTB deal is the perfect sort of deal for us.

From watching his youtube video 1 thing that stands out is that most of his goals are all 1 touch finishes.

Something Giakoumakis use to specialise in. A sign of always being in the right place and right time and being clinical.

Would take him over Miovski or Shankland

It's went a bit quiet on this one. A loan whilst signing someone else wouldn't be the worst move.

I like the fact he can also play wide. Would love a big Samaras esque * out left away in Europe.

Definitely not a wide player, mate. Even though, that's what he done at times with Breda. I've watched a lot of him over the years and he's definitely a striker.

He can obviously play there, if asked, but a bit like Kyogo, it would be a complete waste of his talents.

He's my number one pick. He's 6'3 and from the loins of one of my childhood heroes. The only downside is his first name is Sydney.

A striker that doesn't score goals
