Why did they have to take action? The banner, although controversial, wasn’t a direct backing of Hamas. It’s been assumed it was and the board have acted on an assumption. The GB haven’t said the banner was showing support for Hamas, and they never said they supported their actions in their statement either. They probably should have condemned them, but they haven’t outright said they support them. I hope Celtic Park is a sea of Palestinians flags and scarves etc next week. Then we can take the fine from the hypocritical * at Uefa.

I think the GB do a great job creating an atmosphere but wish they would keep the politics out of Paradise. The Irish republicanism is understandable as that's been part of the club's identity since it was formed.

But protests about things going on in far off countries shouldn't be in CP.

To be clear I'm actually very in favour of people protesting about injustice and despise the new Tory laws to crack down on protests. But better to join a movement and support their activities, I don't think it's right to associate it with a football club.

I’m in that section and I can assure you they haven’t been banned (at this moment anyway)
Look up Celtic star news feed on twitter : a senior source at cp confirms that they haven’t banned the gb

There's a long history of these things being associated with football clubs for a reason, from the USSR to Apartheid South Africa. Politics is not something seperate from life and people come together as a community at football clubs. Moreover, there are things politicised at football all the time. Agree with anti-racism campaigns, support for Ukraine and the current push for gender equality? Political, political and political.

Why should ground-up politics be better kept out but top-down politics is fine?

The timing of the banner was, at best, stupid. It doesn't matter if they mentioned they supported Hamas or not, the message was pretty clear I think. It puts the club in a difficult position and I was surprised, other than a statement, the club didn't take further action.

Yep, as supporters we can call Uefa out for being hypocritical * and I'm sure there will be Palestinian flags all over parkhead, but the club have to be a wee bit more diplomatic than that.

It absolutely does. Because that’s exactly why they will have been banned. It’s not for flying Palestinian flags or they would have been banned long before now. It’s because it’s been assumed they were supporting Hamas, which has neither been confirmed or denied. I think that will be why the club haven’t communicated with the group regarding the ban, which is shocking in all honesty. If you ban a supporters group, the club should at the very least be providing a reason why. The reason will be based on an interpretation however rather than facts.

They displayed a pro Palestinian banner with the message victory to the resistance on the same day hamas carried out atrocities against Israeli civilians. Beyond stupid and, for me, the club had to do something.

Genuine q mate. If the banner wasn’t in support of the actions of Hamas, why not just come out & say that in the statement instead of leaving it open to interpretation & causing a load of unnecessary grief for themselves & for the club (and by the club I don’t mean the board as I couldn’t give a * about them really). It’s also caused division amongst the wider support as evidenced on here.

And just to be clear, my politics are broadly aligned with the GB & I am all for displaying political messages/views at the games including support for the people of Palestine.

It’s still based on assumptions though isn’t it? Regardless of whether you think it’s stupid or not. Why do you think the club aren’t communicating with the group?

Assumptions or not....personally I don't think they're that stupid and knew how antagonistic it was which Is why I was talking about being smarter.
For me that was intentionally done knowing fine well what ruckus it would cause...hence why the should and need to b smarter in how they wan to convey messages of support and protest.

Only they can answer that mate. I’ve said a few times I think they should have condemned Hamas in their statement since they spoke about Israel committing war crimes. If the display was never meant to be in support of Hamas, they maybe didn’t feel the need to bring them into the discussion. I don’t know though.

To be honest though mate, the GB have split the support for years. I’m not sure if it’s envy amongst some fans, or just a dislike for the group, but there are certain fans who will get the pitchforks out at any opportunity. You would think the banner displayed was worse than what’s actually going on in Gaza at the minute for some people. The hospital blast the other night puts it very much into perspective that the banner that may, or may not have been in support of Hamas means * all in the grand scheme of things.

I just feel that banning a section for something that hasn’t actually been proven is a dangerous road to go down. Where does that stop?

I wouldn’t disagree with that. I’ve not really argued against this though. My argument is that the board have banned them more than likely because they have assumed it was a banner in support of Hamas. When that isn’t actually known.

Let’s not forget either, this is the same Celtic board that removed Palestinian flags and banners showing solidarity with them a few years back.

Tbh mate I've no idea what goes on behind the scenes between the club and the gb. How often do they speak?, who speaks? is it on good terms? Nae idea.

From a club point of view, I can understand there being frustrations when your saying to them gonna no do the pyro and the banners that are continually getting us fined and the response from the gb is effectively get it up ye.

As somebody said earlier, they need to be smarter.

Aye, I think this is it for me. So was the banner a bit of attention seeking or were they deliberately being antagonistic. But who were they trying to antagonise?
