“I just stepped in when the 10 stewards attacked him. I dragged the first nine off him but the tenth pulled a knife so I smiled and the glare blinded him for long enough to disarm him. While making sure he got back into the fans I stuck the keys for my villa in Majorca in his pocket and ten grand for flights and spending money”

One thing that struck me when working all this out was how much worse Ronny's record was than the other 3 managers'.

Ange's record is over 1 CL campaign and 1 EL campaign, Brendan's 2 CLs and 1 EL, Lenny's (for the 10-year period UEFA have on their website) 1 CL and 2 ELs. So the coefficient stats should really favour Ronny (2 ELs) and yet he had easily the worst stats. Rodgers was out in front, even though he had a greater proportion of CL games than anyone else (again, for this 10 year period- I know Lenny had some good campaigns before the cutoff), Ange and Lenny were about the same (Lenny a little ahead but Ange had half CL and Lenny ony a third, so we could call that a wash) and then Ronny bottom in spite of never reaching the CL group stages and so having easier games on average.

I do think Ronny was a better coach than most give him credit for and had some good ideas; but his record in Europe was undeniably pretty bad.

Ronny probably is a much, much better coach now. But he gets a much easier time and nostalgia filled specs when his time is looked upon due to him being very likeable.

He had the right ideas as an end goal, he didn’t know how to implement it. His ideas for fitness, spot on, his implementation? Beyond awful.

Ronny only looked good when he stumbled upon the CB pairing of Denayer and Van Dijk. Which is practically cheating in the SPFL. And it was stumble upon, he was strangely unwilling to try Denayer for a long time. Despite any glimpses we seen of him looking brilliant

I blame the club, personally. Clear as day that he needed an experienced mentor like WGS or someone like that. I get that many won't agree with me about that.
I love this idea of Virgil and Denayer being a cheat code for the SPL, it's so true. :56:

I'm sure I remember the two of them scoring a goal in the league after passing it around in the opposition box looking for all the world like Zico and Socrates. Even Inter weren't quite sure how to deal with them IIRC.

Think that was the idea, as demanding him being assistant manager with view of later taking over put a lot of managers off.

Aye I’m at the stage I’d happily sing it again now :giggle1:

I’m still not fully, 100% on board but I’m at about 99.8%, he’s definetly changed for the better. Not heard the word character come out his mouth once yet.

He was an incredibley nieve coach.

We were constantly wide open on the counter. Fans turned on him in the 2nd season when it was abundantly clear he had learned nothing from the previous year.

In a way I was kind of intrigued to see how things would of turned out for Ange this year and if his status amongst the fans would of diminished of we had another * euro campaign.

In a way I think same thing happened to Rodgers in his 3rd season although there was obviously a lot more going on in the background with that fat * lawwell and his constant interfering

Deila wasn’t given any backing whatsoever either. Pretty sure we went into the game against a poor Maribor team having only signed Berget. The anger after the defeat at home to them was very much aimed at the board, and rightly so. Deila might not have been a great manager, but he was cheated out a treble and was working with one arm tied behind his back due to the board.

Heard stories about how Deila was treated from people working there at the time.

Apparently it was really bad. They knew he couldn’t go anywhere else so completely took the *.

Rumours of Deila smashing up his laptop in anger in his office.

Berget, *, I had forgotten about him. I'll never be allowed to forget how utterly useless he was in a CL qualifier for us in Sammy's old role and then him coming back a year later and scoring a worldie that would ultimately put us out. Most Celtic thing ever.

Ronny visibly aged like crazy over his time here. I really feel for him and I'm glad he's got his career back on track.

I’m in the minority but I loved Ronny. Cheated out a treble and the job just came far too soon for him.

Not to say I’d have him back at all, but I’m glad he’s carved a decent career for himself in management. They love him over in the US.

Probably caught Denayer with a kebab once and that was it.

I never 'got' Ronny or what it was people thought he was going to do for our club. For all the modern manager talk, it just felt like a punt because we didn't like the realistic alternatives.

You cant really make that argument given that we were still getting beaten by teams who had spent far less than us and who had a fraction of the budget we had.

Sacking Deila was 100% the correct decision and the club was regressing under him.

We have been beaten regularly by teams with smaller budgets. Does that mean we can’t ever make the case that the managers aren’t being backed properly? The Maribor game was a prime example of our board doing as little as possible whilst wanting the biggest reward financially.

We were regressing, and sacking him was the right thing. It’s a fact he was cheated out a treble though. It’s also a fact he wasn’t backed with any sort of money.

The Norwegian Malmo manager coming out saying everybody knows how to beat a Ronny team as they’re out on their feet by 80 minutes was the nail in the coffin for me.

Opened my eyes to it always being a problem with him.

I remember at the time thinking he really had some good ideas and there were some games when we saw what he was trying to do. Just as with Ange, I found some of what Ronny had to say about the way to live your life inspirational on a personal level.

A good example of how he wasn't backed was Craig Gordon. Ronny was trying to move us into a modern way of playing (something Rodgers would later do more successfully) and Gordon, although a good shotstopper was not a modern goalkeeper. Compared to Gordon, Hart is an Onana with the ball at his feet and a Neuer sweeping up behind the defence. Madness.

He was a very inexperienced manager from a smaller league than the SPL and one of their smaller clubs at that. It was clear as day that he would need a DoF to mentor him. Instead, we gave him John Collins: a man whose own managerial career floundered for the exact same reasons, i.e. that he had some very good ideas and couldn't successfully implement them, famously losing the dressing room at Hibs for shaming the players about their fitness.

Another example is the lack of advice about the media. How could a young manager from a small club in Norway possibly know what to expect from the devious Scottish media? The moment he talked publicly about needing to get players to change their lifestyle, it was a countdown to the media getting a photograph of Broony with that kebab, which in turn really painted him into a corner.

No, in hindsight, he never had a chance.
