It's an issue that's somehow plagued multiple managers now.

Lennon, Ange and now Rodgers have all seemingly thought we don't need a powerful CDM to compete in Europe, I don't get it.

That is literally what he is. He is the sitter with O'Riley and Hatate ahead of him. I find it hard to blame him cos he's clearly not suited to that role in Europe but for some reason we seem to keep going with it

What about him screams CDM? It’s baffling.

His game is receiving the ball under pressure, keeping the ball ticking over and playing the odd progressive pass to cut a team open.

He’s not a physical, tough tackling and defensively minded player. So why is he not playing as one of the more advanced midfielders? Or at least alongside a proper CDM in a 2.

Didn't think he was all that bad, few nice bits few poor bits. Guessing it's the usual 'he's never a DM, lost a yard of pace' patter aye?

I don't think it's even this season tbh mate. It's been evident foe a few years.

Having him as what is in theory, our protection in front of the defence, is suicide. And I'm a massive fan of his. We aren't good enough to get away with it.

He’s a centre mid, he’s not Victor Wanyama. Is the crux of my point, which I think/hope you get.

Think he looked slow and passing was poor...its very evident the midfield is an issue in Europe for us. Defence gets zero protection. Nothing to do with his pace.

At Ibrox and tonight him and MOR were the ‘double pivot’ with Hatate ahead. He’s not a holding midfielder and never will be. He’s at his best with good players beside him, he’s a quality footballer and leader and he’s miles down the list of issues.

    Exactly. He’s a centre mid.

But for some reason he keeps being played as a defensive mid. Call it “hipster” all you want but we play with a 6 and two 8s - or a CDM and two more advanced CM. He is played as the CDM and has been since Brown left.

You've literally picked on the issue.

He's a natural centre mid, why is he being tasked with offering our defense protection.

I know this is after the fact because I was happy with the team when it was announced but in hindsight I think we should go with 2 sitting midfielders away in Europe, iwata would be my choice to play with cal but he doesn't seem to be rated by Ange or brendan much.

One of the poorest performances I’ve seen from him in a Celtic shirt.

Playing a double pivot with McGregor and O’Riley is even worse. Neither are defensive players at all.

That's not exactly how we set up now though, he gets more support in there and the defensive duties are shared a bit more across the three midfielders.

I think if Hatate was on it tonight we would have looked good in the middle of the park. Few nice wee moves broke down with him.

And mcgregor has played deep for at least 2 of those managers consistently. He's a great player but it's clearly a common theme...playing him there, certainly without any assistance, isn't working.

It's not against the law to state it.

Hasn’t been the case twice in recent weeks, namely the 2 hardest/biggest games.

I disagree with that, O'Riley is excellent defensively. Won possession back a lot tonight.
