CELTIC are locked in talks with Benfica over a loan deal for midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

The 21-year-old Portuguese Under-21 international is not part of the Lisbon club’s first-team plans this season and is poised to be farmed out.

It’s understood the Parkhead club are keen to offer him the chance to spend the coming year in Glasgow with a deal now in the pipeline ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Bernardo came through the youth system at the Estadio da Luz and spent last season on loan at Pacos de Ferreira.

A permanent move away from Benfica appears unlikely at this stage given the player has a contract until the summer of 2027 and release clause of €100million. However, manager Roger Schmidt is keen for him to play regular football, which he is not guaranteed presently under his watch.

The Parkhead club have done business with Benfica in the past, agreeing a loan deal for Jota that subsequently was converted into a permanent transfer.

Celtic, meanwhile, have had a £4m bid for Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden kicked into touch.

The Parkhead club are believed to have made the move for the Denmark Under-21 international in the last few days and are now assessing whether to get back round the negotiating table. Reports in Denmark last night claimed that Celtic would have to meet Brondby’s valuation of £6m to land the 21-year-old.

It’s thought that Brondby received another offer for the player from Houston Dynamo last week and that the MLS club are still keeping tabs on the situation.

Kvistgaarden ended last season strongly with nine goals in 35 appearances and is seen as Brondby’s biggest asset.

With Oh Hyeon-gyu sidelined with injury, Rodgers only has Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda — nominally a winger — as central striking options.

Leeds and Southampton have been linked with a move for Matt O’Riley.

However, with Reo Hatate currently injured, Celtic are unlikely to entertain any bids this week.

Rodgers expects a busy week in the transfer market ahead of the window closing on Friday.

Earlier in the summer, Celtic signed Marco Tilio, Odin Thiago Holm, Yang Hyun-jun, Kwon Hyeok-kyu and Maik Nawrocki.

But with Nawrocki, Stephen Welsh and Cameron-Carter Vickers all out for two months, Rodgers is likely to try and add cover in defence before his side meet Rangers on Sunday with a centre-back and left-back high on his list of priorities.

Luis Palma, the Honduran winger, is due in Glasgow to complete the formalities of his transfer from Greek side Aris.
