I thought he was really poor at the time. I don't know what to say as TBH I don't remember many details about him; I just remember hating him at the time.

In my case, I don't know a word of Japanese nor anything about how their names work and heard he's called Kyogo and just went with it. I bet it's the same for most people. I don't think racism necessarily has much to do with it.

He played at a time were we didn't win much, think keepers always get a hard time under those circumstances.

Could say that for anything in here but. :56:
I know it’s controversial because I know not too many agree, but I’m convinced it’s on the money. Like yourself, I respect the other views as well though. :60:

Aye, mate: the ‘racist’ thing was me more referring to an inadvertent cultural thing, rather than folk intentionally being racist. Probably better words I could have used tbh.

The Kyogo / Furuhashi thing is easily explained.

Kyogo is a particularly cool looking/sounding name, especially among the kids. He’s a striker, kids love strikers and they love the name. It’s a brand, simple as that.

    Case closed.

Tell me you're confusing Gordon Marshall with David Marshall?

Gordon Marshall was chronic to the point many Tims were convinced he was throwing games. He was that bad.

It's actually a fair point now that I think about it.

Kyogo, Daizen and Reo all on the back of their strips. Yet Kyogo is the only one we really call Kyogo.

We all immediately say Maeda and Hatate.

Never really thought about it before.

It's not racist though or even unconscious bias. James probably hits the nail on the head. Kyogo is a marketable name. It's just stuck.

To be fair the Samurai assassin doesn't seem to mind.

Aye, this had occurred to me and I think it is largely right in practice. I just find it weirdly inconsistent (and therefore, to someone of my way of thinking, a bit irksome) that our go-to for Hatate et al is the surname, but not for Kyogo.

Be the old Asperger’s making its presence felt again. It’s not *always* a superpower. :56:

A lack of cultural awareness, maybe?

You are a really polite guy and I owe you the same respect for your opinions. I hope it's not too confrontational to continue to defend fans on this one.

Cultural misunderstandings are everywhere. Like I absolutely hate it when Indonesian students call me "sir". I'm 46 not 76! But they're just trying to show respect, which is highly valued in their culture (as it used to be here) whereas we tend to value friendliness and inclusion more these days*. Conversely many westerners in Indonesia tend to use informal pronouns to show friendliness, while in most places they should be showing respect. Neither group is intentionally ignorant; it's just the nature of "unknown unknowns".

It's good to learn more about these things and you seem to have a fair bit of knowledge of Japan. I appreciate you bringing it up.

    * I was once asked by older students why I didn't like "sir" when I was in Indonesia. They were genuinely astonished when I said it made me feel like they didn't like me very much. They still didn't want to call me by my first name, so we settled on a compromise of "teacher" (which is more a Chinese thing than an Indonesian thing, but we could all live with it).

Brendan will be remembered more fondly than Ange in the fullness of time. Maybe even Martin depending on how his second reign pans out.

Maybe not overly controversial, but I see us absolutely slapping the huns about this season. Squeal will have them back to Pedro levels before long and Rodgers is gonna embarrass the * multiple times.
