Not Actually that Crucial a Summer as of August 2023...beginning to now think everything isnt fine!

CELTIC manager Brendan Rodgers last night confirmed he will enter the market for a new central defender to replace the outgoing Carl Starfelt.


The Swedish stopper was left out of Rodgers’ starting line-up for yesterday’s win over Ross County, with La Liga side Celta Vigo putting the finishing touches to a deal for the 28-year-old.


Starfelt appeared for the final half hour of the Premiership opener in place of new signing Maik Nawrocki, with Rodgers later revealing the defender’s introduction was partly motivated by sentiment.


With Starfelt keen on the transfer to Spain and negotiations between the two clubs at an advanced stage, Rodgers expects a deal to be concluded in the next few days.


He said: ‘I wanted to put Carl Starfelt on because it might be his last appearance here. There has been interest in him and he wants to take up that possibility. We will resolve that as quick as we can.


‘The clubs (are) in communication and I’m sure that will go through early part of next week, if not before.

‘I thought it would be nice for him to get maybe a final appearance at Celtic Park.’

One of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings, Starfelt arrived from Rubin Kazan for £4million in 2021.

Although Nawrocki has checked in from Legia Warsaw for a similar fee and Cameron Carter-Vickers remains a trusted starter, Rodgers only has Stephen Welsh and the unfancied Yuki Kobayashi as cover. Therefore, he will seek a replacement for the 28-year-old.

‘Yes, we’d need to get another centre-half,’ he confirmed.

 

We need a Gk, LB and a creative player who can play LW as well, that’s the priority I would say first and third are the two places needing most attention

a CB if Starfelt goes which looks pretty much nailed in now, (I hope she’s worth it) it would be a pity to move and get dumped a few weeks later.

Put it this way their exclusives should go to player suggestions and not media rumours

 

Hard to answer really with 0 not being an option

 

Bare minimum mate for me..

We won't get it but I'd argue we needed better backup at right back and a creative 10 type who could maybe play wide also on either wing..

Edit: I'll go one further actually as although we definitely need a Jota replacement....I'm still no comfortable with Abada being our starting right winger. I feel we could be doing with a different type. Maybe a left footed right winger. Don't even think we have a single left footer on either wing?

Yang i like the look of but I'd still like another option..

There really isn’t any excuses now, Rodgers has had his preseason and now a competitive game.

We have so far:

- Got £5m for Ange in early June
- Sold Jota around 1st of July for £25-27m (around £18-20m to us)
- Mooy retired so a chunky wage of the books.
- Have got rid of Barkas, Orhoghide, Shaw, Hazard, Montgomery and have a buyer for Soro.
- have interest in Ajeti, Welsh, Scales and I imagine a few other fringe players
- now selling Starfelt £5m.
- done a Japanese tour worth £5m at least to the club.

We have spent between £11-12m and are still sitting on about £18m of surplus this window alone.

You add in January since we announced our interim accounts which included signing Kobayashi and Johnston and our summer business, showing £60m in the bank with a £9m or so deficit between receivables and outgoings on transfers so say closer to £51m in the bank and £27m profit.

We will have saw an OPEX loss second half of the season but still released a statement about being more profitable than we thought we were.

We sold Juranovic and Giakoumakis for £11m rising to £14.3m and only signed Oh for about £2.8m. So that transfer deficit in the accounts would be wiped out.

I know we spend money on far more than just signings and have put some new deals out but we also have a squad full of sellable assets who will mainly want to move on in the next year. Hatate, CCV, O’Riley, Abada and Johnston who will mostly not be here come the end of the summer 24 window.

A very long winded way of saying let’s get the cheque book out and get some quality in. We really need 5 in before the window shuts and most of them need to be ready to play first team football, secure a title and compete in Europe.

We have signed 5 talented young guys, Nawrocki looks like a first team player but the others are guys with talent who will have a part to play but need time to adapt and support from others ready to start week in and out now.

Improvements to guys like Abada, O’Riley, Hatate, Turnbull etc will get us so far but they need help and some fresh quality to add to them and stalwarts like CCV, McGregor and Kyogo.

There is the here and now to think about but we can’t forget winning the league this year is worth guaranteed £50m+ CL money from the new format next year.

Said earlier but I hope that's the last quiet week of the summer, it has to be.

I think we'll get a replacment for Starfelt in this week, but I hope we add at least another player in alongside whoever that replacement is.

Can't afford to * about anymore, I've been patient so far, but if there's not at the very least 2 players in by next Monday (or 2 serious rumours) I'll be getting worried.

 

Our squad is looking desperately poorer by the day. Need some serious activity in the next few days.

We’re an injury to CCV, McGregor or Kyogo away from being the worst team in the Champions League.

 

Got to be at least one in this week.

 

Totally agree we have lost mooy and Jota and really haven't replaced them and now Starfelt going we really need to start spending that money laying in the bank and get at least 5 quality signings in or it's a short European run .
