Like the Union Jack and the Confederate flag in the US, it has a history and certain, er, associations cough cough. In some countries (such as China), waving it would be roughly equivalent to waving a Swastika in Tel Aviv.

That would be offensive to most Japanese people mate.

I think the comparisson to the Union Jack is more accurate than with the Swastika, even though in countries like China and Korea it's similarly offensive. Haven't often heard people say it's offensive to show the Union Jack in former colonies even though the UK has done enough bad in history to justify the same status as Japan.

Btw, the Japanese navy is flying the rising sun flag on its ships since 1954 again. Think they even had it on excersises in South Korea. It's their official ensign.

Objectively, that may be true (although I tend to think some empires are more evil than others and to my mind the British one was rather average in that respect while the Japanese one was up there with the Spanish and the Belgian ones); but having lived in China, I can say you will get a very different response to the Imperial Japanese flag in China to what you would get waving the Union Jack in India or the vast majority of Ireland. I don't recommend trying it.

Edit: FWIW I do think the Union Jack is just as offensive a symbol of the empire as the Imperial Japanese flag ("The Butcher's Apron" I've heard it called) and doesn't represent what modern Britain is about. Although as we've seen in Russia, these ideas can come back after skipping a generation or two.

No, but it would hurt our Korean players deeply. Even though teachers in Japan are mostly leftist, those who decide what goes into history books are right wing, so the situation with Japanese history is complex.

Do you really think so or are you just hyping him up? That's genuinely exciting if true!

The rising sun flag is often used by ultra right wing nationalists in Japan and most Japanese will find it offensive and, as you say, it would deeply offend our Korean players

Big Marc was a class defender, shame it had to end early.
If he is in this mould we have won a watch

Genuinely thought most Japanese people would rather forget that part of their history. I'm not deeply clued up on it though.

If he's even half the player big Rieper was we've won a watch.

Absolutely sure him and Stubbs went through the stop the 10 season without a yellow card between them. Incredible for defenders, absolutely miraculous in Scotland. :giggle1:

Sounds like a really solid partnership with CCV! Sing it with me: There's a starman waiting on the bench... :52:
