I never really understand how fans struggle to reconcile loving somewhere/one/thing and leaving it.

Very easy to see that he loved his time here in a genuine way.

Gonna be a very difficult guy to replace.

 

He's some player. Shame to lose him, understandable why he took the offer, and I genuinely believe he loved it here. Good luck, hope to see you again in Europe.

100% don't doubt he loved his time and the fans here.
Can leave and still hold that feeling and more.

For me (if I seem to fall in to that category), it's just that the message sort of conflicts each other.

I've honestly no issue at all with him leaving at all and wish him all the best and hope he goes on to earn a fortune and perhaps play at a high level if he comes back to Europe. A level of player we've not seen at this club in a long long time

I don’t think his footballing aspirations end in Saudi maybe that’s his point?


He’s got goals as a player, and he’s embarked on another journey.

I don’t know the lad or pretend to but I can imagine his goals include:

Lifetime financial security - which he is taking care of

Playing in the English premier league- seems to be everyone’s fkin goal


Going back and playing for Benfica- the team he’s supported his whole life

Going to Saudi for a year or two sees his future taken care of. He can easily move to England or to Benfica after a couple years playing alongside top players and under a good coach.

On a serious note though you could tell he loved his time here. Will probably be the next big name working as one of our scouts next to wanyama

 

Yeah I reckon two years here has done him wonders in confidence and finding his footballing place.

He won't see out that Saudi contract, even if he does, he will return to Europe somewhere and you may very be right, in him eventually ending up back at Benfica as a better player than he left them.


Honestly, glad he was here, wish him all the best and I'll look forward to seeing him again in Europe at least.

Wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular, just think our fans can be pretty stroppy when players move on. We often seem to take it as a knock, as opposed to just accepting that people sometimes just want change, or get a unique opportunity.

For me the message seemed sincere, and sincerity can sacrifice clarity. Having his social media team post a generic “thanks for everything, always a Celt” message on his Instagram would be very concise, with a clear message that could be controlled, but it you put a camera in front of a young guy and ask him to speak about something - a time in his life - that he’s passionate about and will likely be romanticising, you’re going to get a bit of a scattered message, imo.

Liked that. Still can't respect his decision to go there for the money but appreciate the gesture and do believe he genuinely loved his time here.

I think he 100% stays another season if the Saudi's weren't interested. The clubs in the EPL wouldn't have offered the money we wanted, and he'd be doubling his wage rather than getting 10 times the amount, which is still good, but not as tempting.

You can't turn down 180 thousand a week, tax free. Insane money, and we got a good fee as well.

He'll be back in Europe within 2 years. To who? I've no idea, but good luck to the lad either way.
