That's really awesome. Always thought he was a bit of a p*** TBH. I clearly got that dead wrong.

It's a good post that makes some fair points, but I want to vomit every time someone uses that expression "generational wealth" in positive tone.
A lot of that seems fair to me, though. I hadn't considered how this would help us sell ourselves to potential signings, but it's clearly true.

Wonder what those same peoples opinion is on the generational wealth of the likes of the Trumps, Kennedys, murdochs or even the Windsors.

Likely wouldn’t have got anywhere near £25 million if he’d went there though

True. I'm surprised he never tried to go to Tottenham instead of Saudi Arabia. Money for us and him, and not a career dead end.

    * him, wee *. Not for leaving or chasing the money, I don't begrudge him such a move after 2 years. * him for going and negotiating a contract with another club before we had agreed to a transfer. I know 25m is decent money but I honestly think we should have got more, given the chunk we have to give away.

That being said, I am gutted he's gone. He will not be as easily replaced as some seem to think, especially under rodgers. 50 odd goal involvements in 80 odd appearances do not grow on trees. Big game players don't grow on trees.

Need to remember there were circumstances to why we got jota on loan then for 6.5m. It was in part due to what was a degree of poor management at benfica. I remember the resident benfica fan on here saying that the fanbase was surprised and disappointed he was allowed to go and it was down to having a manager that was reluctant to give young players a proper chance. Chances are we won't get that lucky again

He is up there with the best players we have had at the club in recent memory. We will struggle to replace him for a similar fee. As previously mentioned, especially with Rodgers at the helm.

Why on earth would you think Jota was a *? Baffling.

He always comes across as a cracking guy.

Still going on about it? Take a day off.

Ajax, Roma and Inter Milan weren’t interested in signing him. Plus, he’ll be getting 3/4/5 times the money in Saudi as he would have been offered going to those clubs.

It’s not confusing in the slightest.

Just on a side note, £135m we have pulled in eight figure transfer fees since the Wanyama deal.. that money must've kept us at the table in Europe with the way football finances have gone in that 15 year period.

Credit to the businessmen and scouts at the club.

Just how he is on the pitch. It really doesn't matter, because I can see I was totally wrong.

Theres loads of guys out there though when you think of it, a lot to be signed for cheap when young as well.

Solomon from Shakhtar they signed for like £4million from Israel, Kvaratshkelia was it Rubin Kazan signed from Georgia for like £500k, Mane, Salah, Mahrez, Ziyech etc etc near enough everyone at one point was at a pish team and available for £500k-£4million you just need to be good at spotting them and then lucky to get them but they're always out there.

Hojlund from Atalanta Sturm Graz signed from Copenhagen for £1.5million and sold him for £20million to Atalanta and will now go for £50million+

Raphinha at Barcelona was once signed for £5million by Sporting Lisbon from Guimarares.

These guys are always available and theres probably guys in Norway, Austria, Serbia, Portugal, Croatia, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland, Israel the lower tiers of France, England, Germany who will end up being sold for £50million+ in a few years who we could sign the now.

Saudi is hardly a career dead end.

In 3 years make 30 milion, post tax, that's a whole careers worth there. Go play with and against some of the top players in the world at a team that has a decent history and is a title contender, under a manager that can likely help him break into the Portugal squad especially since there will be eyes on the Saudi league this year.

Then, after that spell and you've made all the money you'll ever need, see what chances come up to either continue to earn like crazy or go to likely a top 5 league in a strong team (if he continues to play like he has for us) at 26 years old.

Can't blame him for taking it one bit, just sad that we've lost a star.

More than a whole careers worth really maybe even more than double a very good whole careers worth. Up to this point he likely has not even earned £1million after tax. At Benfica he was maybe on £5k a week max probably not even that since he'd have signed his last contract as a teenager and then 1 year at us on say £20k a week.

Even if he went onto have a really good career like moved to Aston Villa was successful there for 3/4 years and then went to Leverkusen or Roma or someone like that until he was 31/32 and then retired after a couple of years back at Benfica or someone.

He'd probably only end up earning about £15million after tax his whole career.

He must have been in utter shock when they contacted him and probably * himself the entire time until he actually got the contract signed. Imagine that falling through and then thinking I will need to work another 10+ year and be superb just to even see half that money.

I'm sorry, but what serious club would look at Saudi League players? At best, a Turkish club might. And they have issues with paying players.
Nuno's stock is low, as well.
Saudi league is a cozy retirement home at best. Early retirement home for some.

Plenty right now, look at what's happening, they're making strides in recruitment, aye it's a big cash dump in, but all these Europeans will be watched and have opportunities after. Even after the China boom, plenty players all left direct to big clubs, Ighalo went from Watford to China to United, Oscar ended up at Barca as 2 examples. Unless he utterly * it over there, he's hardly going to toil to find a good club elsewhere after.

It's the same every time. He won't be the first or last player to chase the money.

He helped us to be successful and vice versa. Rather that than the likes of McCarthy, Soro and Barkas sitting on their Celtic contracts contributing * all.

Appreciate there are players out there, bargains to be found and that most players values will be relatively low at a younger age, increasing if they are successful.

Can't agree that there are loads of players out there thst we could get in on a similar deal to jota that would provide a similar return with regard to goal contributions, big game contributions and consistency levels atca young age. Yes there will be some but I think loads is a bit of a stretch. For every jota and every one of those players you mentioned there are probably dozens that show similar potential, go for similar values, at a similar age but will never go on to hit similar heights, or even remotely close.

Like you just said yourself. It takes a bit of luck to find these players, and we got lucky with jota. We might get lucky again but it will be far from easy to replace what was our most technically gifted and, argueably, our most creative player with similar. Especially with our budget and location.
