People often forget this when talking about players like larsson being so loyal to us compared to players now. While he was happy here and wanted to stay, He knew how good he was and likely would have pushed for a move after the 2000/01 season if we didn't offer him 40k a week, as he knew someone else (man utd) probably would

China had thrown money to elevate its football. Didn't work. Saudi Arabia will be no different, because they are in essence, doing the same. Flashy investment that doesn't help develop local talent. Jota is getting nowhere near the Portugal squad if he goes there. The quality of the league is low. This is why Celtic shouldn't sell. Selling a player to Arsenal affirmed us as capable of producing players who can do well. Selling a player to a Saudi club does not elevate our reputation in any way, but rather, harms it.

Just over £25m. Probably be announced as our record sale then if it’s all guaranteed.

    Unsure.

In 5-10 years China never attracted the quality Saudi Arabia already have in less than 2.

On the flip side, we show that doing well here get you a massive money move to SA who are throwing money at their league.

You use China agin and again but the thing with China the government stepped in. The government in SA are involved in this every step of the way so it’s not the same as China at all.

SA has more money, loads more money.

Loved him at us. Good fee but going to be very difficult to replicate his quality with a replacement. Hopefully Rodgers gets to use about £15m of it.

We've already had a huge budget so imo he should get all £25m. Why would he be short changed? Yes we don't need to spend it all but the full allocation needs to be made available for the correct players.

Separate to the discussion about Jota himself and why he is choosing the move to SA, this transfer really is a no brainer at that price. I'll be disappointed to see him go but that is incredible money for us, and if we reinvest it wisely we can definitely bring in two players of similar quality while still banking a profit.

all well and good saying jota is getting 10 times his wages but we aint getting 10 times his transfer value .for a guy with another 4 years on his contract its not a massive amount ,should be a lot more. while desperately trying to find a positive in this at least english clubs wont think they have us over a barrell in terms of transfers we wont have some mid-lower table shitebags bidding £10 ~15 m for him

Transfer fees a guesstimate right now. They better announce a record sale when this is complete or I'll be raging.

Larsson in today's world would of ran after two years to the EPL. Larsson is not an anomaly he is just a product of that time where there wasn't much difference in wages, Celtic were competitive in Europe and the league was a little bit more of a higher standard than it is today.

    Agreed.

Comparitively speaking, when we sell a player to the EPL or Bundesliga and they do well, it helps is in the market when attracting players, and gives us a stronger negotiating stance when selling.

Some ppl on here actually still believe Jota will get a call up playing in South America, because nevez will. Nevez is an established International who has already proven his worth. Jota was on the cusp of it, with European football. Playing in SA will in no way justify his inclusion, it will only hinder it.

Professionally speaking it's a stupid move. His development will stall and his international ambitions put on ice.

Financially it's fantastic for the kid.

As for SA football? * all future. Just like China and the USA before it. Throwing money at foreign talent with no real infrastructure on place is like a cheap prostitute wearing a fur coat with no knickers.

The USA has come along way through hard work at developing the sport itself, and it's country can attract a stready flow of players through the lifestyle it can offer.

SA? Come play in our leagues, enjoy the windows of your hotel room and fence around the compound. There's a pool and a gym too.
