That's a shame, he was good in the B team, I reckon he'll be picked up by a prem or championship academy, there for a year and then an EFL loan the season after

250k apparently for a 16yo, decent money so they must rate him. I’ve never heard of him mentioned before though

 

250k is a pittance to them and it's pretty much what they would have to pay for any youth they took from another club. Last season they took about £130m in transfers and only spent about £50m, they've already taken £35m this summer already.

It's both, but to be honest PL2, good loans etc means they're future is definitely looked after. I don't blame the players one bit.

Add in the further requirements around Homegrown for prem clubs and the now inability to recruit outside of the UK for youth and it means that we're prime for.the poaching

Hickey refused a new deal here to go to * Hearts under Craig Levein because he thought it’d be better for his career. Dembele turned down millions to stay here cos he was promised all sorts of opportunities. They both played against each other at 16 on Dembele’s debut.

Look how that worked out for them.

Blaming it on money is just excusing our failure at developing academy players. Start giving players real development plans and chances and you’ll see more and more wanting to stay for the good of their career.

 

Double edged sword though isn’t it. Us as fans demand success. Do we drop jota, Abada, maeda, haksabanovic for vata to bring through an academy prospect over giving the others playtime? It’s a hard decision, then when you add to it the pressures a Celtic manager is under for success I totally understand it

 

True, the youth set up is SO much better in England. Having 21s and 23s squads with a competitive league. I think it’s shocking the standard we have the likes of vata and summers etc playing in that lowland league

 

We play in the least competitive league in Europe. We’ve won 5 trebles in 7 seasons. And a double in there as well. There’s no excuse for not giving youngsters opportunities.

Theres simply no reason for not giving Matthew Anderson the minutes Bernabei was getting at the end of the season other than the fact we spent decent money on Bernabei and Anderson is an academy player.

Nobody is saying flood the team with academy players and accept being *. Players aren’t even getting opportunities. Getting 5/10 minutes once or twice a season isn’t an opportunity.

 

I personally would want 4/5 youths in….but it’s just not realistic in the cut throat nature of football. I don’t actually think there’s many in our youth good enough at the minute. Anderson definitely should have got minutes in front of bernabei but like you say the money we spent is a factor. I just hope we don’t waste vata

 

Celtic B team coaches, Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus are taking their young charges over the Irish Sea as part of their pre-season preparations to play League of Ireland Premier Division outfit, Sligo Rovers in a friendly at The Showgrounds on Tuesday, July 11 with a 7pm kick-off

There are a number of connections between the clubs, most notably the likes of former Rovers’ man Willie McStay, Celtic’s current Head of Academy Scouting, who was player/manager from 1992 to 1994 when he won the historic Treble of the FAI Cup, First Division and First Division Shield in the ‘93/94 season.

Also, Celtic legend, Sean Fallon was born in Sligo in 1922 and joined the Bit O’ Red in the late 1940s before joining Celtic a couple of years later. Fallon went on to become a true Celtic hero, making over 250 appearances with the Hoops over an eight-year period.

The Sligoman would then go on to become the club’s assistant manager from 1962 until 1975, taking the team shortly afterwards as caretaker when manager Jock Stein was involved in a near-fatal car crash.

In 2014, The Showgrounds all-weather pitch underwent development works to improve the club’s facilities and it was announced that the new facility would be named in Fallon’s honour and to this day is named The Sean Fallon Centre, the home of the Bit O’ Red’s Academy.

Speaking on the announcement of the game, Sligo manager, John Russell said on welcoming Celtic to The Showgrounds: ‘’It promises to be a good occasion for both clubs here at The Showgrounds.

‘’I know there is a good history between the clubs with various players or staff having played or managed both here and in Scotland.

‘’It will be a good test for us, and it will also be good for the supporters of both clubs to come to The Showgrounds and see a good game of football’.

Club Chairman, Tommy Higgins added: “We are very happy to welcome Celtic Football Club to The Showgrounds on July 11t.

‘’The game will hopefully be an entertaining one for the supporters and we hope to see a large Celtic support here on the night too.

“Celtic are a hugely followed club around the world, particularly here in Ireland and we are all looking forward to the game.”

There is, of course, one more connection, possibly the most important Sligo link to Celtic. Founder of the club, Brother Walfrid was born in Ballymote.

Walfrid founded the club in 1888 as a means of raising funds for the Catholic Community in the area.

He is remembered at both Celtic Park in Glasgow and the Community Park in Ballymote where there are two sculptures in his honour.

Celtic FC B will kick-off their third season in the Scottish Lowland Football League with a trip to take on Cumbernauld Colts as the Bhoys found out their opening three fixtures of the 2023/24 campaign.

The young Hoops’ preparations for the new season are now underway, and they will take part in a series of friendly matches next month.

Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus’ side will travel to take on Fraserburgh and League of Ireland Premier Division side Sligo Rovers in July.

The Celts are set for another busy campaign, including a third season in the Lowland League.

Last campaign, the young Celtic side finished third place in the fifth tier of Scottish football, and they will be aiming to produce more strong performances.

The Bhoys will be on their travels on the opening day of the new season, taking on Cumbernauld Colts (July 22).

The B team will then welcome Caledonian Braves (July 25) and Cowdenbeath (July 29) to the Excelsior in Airdrie for their opening two home fixtures of the 2023/24 campaign.

Fixtures are subject to change, and the full schedule will be released in due course.

Celtic FC B will take on East Kilbride at home in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy, following today’s draw at Hampden Park.

The young Hoops will enter the competition from the first round, and take on the Lowland League side at the beginning of next month.

Last campaign, the Bhoys reached the third round of the competition, defeating Albion Rovers and Livingston B along the way.

The Celts were eliminated by eventual Scottish League One winners Dunfermline Athletic, after a closely contested match-up which ended in a 2-1 defeat at East End Park.

Darren O’Dea and Stephen McManus will be aiming to take their squad as far as possible in the competition once more, with the tie against East Kilbride set to be played on August 1/2.

Should the Hoops advance from the first round, they will go on to face Stirling Albion away from home in the second round.

That match is scheduled to be played on August 14/15.

 

Seems like we are bleeding young talent and they are leaving left right and centre down south.

* shambles Scotland with the set up of under 21’s or under 23’s unlike in England.

Plus Brexit hasn’t helped us either due to players being poached due to work permits etc.
