This is gathering pace but wouldn't be surprised if he backed oot at the last minute and signed for another club.

Same. Can’t really see him doing much in management or coaching anyway. Good captain and player and by all accounts trained hard everyday.

Would rather keep Kennedy or Chris Davies back.

Is the original OP of this thread even around anymore? IIRC he only made it after throwing a tantrum during Ange's last few games :67:

Celtic: Brendan Rodgers poised to make return
Former Leicester City manager confident he can mend old wounds with embittered Celtic fans.

Brendan Rodgers is poised to return to Celtic after holding further positive talks with the club’s hierarchy about succeeding Ange Postecoglou, who left for Tottenham Hotspur last week. Rodgers won back-to-back Trebles in Glasgow but incurred the wrath of supporters after leaving for Leicester City midway through his third season in February 2019.

Celtic have explored the merits of other candidates such as Enzo Maresca, who has just been part of a Treble of his own at Manchester City, but Rodgers is now the clear frontrunner and could be named as the new manager before the end of the week.

The Northern Irishman, who has also managed Watford, Reading, Swansea City and Liverpool, held face-to-face discussions with Michael Nicholson, the Celtic chief executive, and the club’s chief financial officer over the weekend in Majorca, where he owns a house.

Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s majority shareholder, flew into Glasgow on Tuesday to continue negotiations, with the Scottish champions said to be increasingly confident that they will land their No 1 target. Rodgers, who has also been in the running to take over at Leeds United, has been out of work since being sacked by relegation-bound Leicester City in early April. The 50-year-old had intimated that he intended to take a sabbatical from management, but it appears that the lure of resuming life in Glasgow’s goldfish bowl has proved too strong.

Despite significant supporter backlash when he left first time around, including his home being broken into while his wife and stepdaughter were sleeping, Rodgers clearly believes he can mend old wounds while continuing Celtic’s domestic dominance. Celtic, for their part, are evidently keen to engage a wise old head as they bid to get their hands on the vastly increased bounty on offer in the expanded Champions League group stage for the 2024/25 season.

Good point about the 2024 UCL.

If ever there was a time to take a calculated approach it's now.

Would McGregor welcome BR back, considering he was there when the mid-season getaway happened? I'd think McGregor would hold this against Rodgers, as it was a * move from someone claiming to support the club.

I mean, Mcgregor is a professional, but I could also see him saying to the board: don't hire BR again.

Think McGregor was quoted as saying to forgive Rodgers not long after he left?

If it wasn't for Rodgers I don't believe McGregor would be where he is right now as captain of Celtic.

    I wouldn't worry.

I can't stand the guy but how snide is that article talking about the backlash then immediately following it up with the break in..

I think there’s a lot of revisionism going on with peoples views of what Rodgers did here. We were all absolutely gutted when he took that Leicester job. So why then are people trying to make out like we were playing rotten football?

We got a result HOME and AWAY against Man City in Europe.

We beat Anderlecht 3-0 away from home. We put it up to a top class Bayern in a 2-1 home loss. We got a draw away to Monchengladbach.

We qualified for the Champions League 2 years running which we always found notoriously difficult before he came.

The year we * it against Athens, we papped Leipzig out of our Europa League group.

Now I’m not here to tell you that we had a stellar European record but we did hold our own in many regards. The obvious stand out result against him is AEK Athens. A result he redeemed with Europa qualification through arguably a CL standard group. Both times we reached knockout football we were put out by better teams than us: Zenit and Valencia.

Overall, Rodgers won 7 out of 7 trophies. He all but secured a treble treble. A * treble treble. With back to back Champions League qualification, some top European nights against juggernauts Man City, twice in Europe after Christmas.

If you hate Rodgers and you don’t want to see his face at Celtic Park again that’s your prerogative. But if that’s your stance, own it. Don’t try to make out Rodgers was anything but a roaring success who we championed til the very day he left.

Did I mention he did an entire season unbeaten in all domestic competitions?

    A fairly reliable ITK

All done bar the signature. I said Friday and I still think that’s where we are. Todays developments were pretty important for how we are to move forward as a club. A lot of which was discussed prior to Ange leaving.

Detailed plans over modernising aspects of the club agreed upon and committed to including a long term strategy for the youth setup, medical/sports science department and scouting. A strong transfer budget and the key for Rodgers was the ability to push the boat out on certain transfers that he wanted (Castagne an example of not doing so in his previous stint). Linked to the transfer budget was a complete mindset change regards to Europe. BR demanding strong willingness for the club to view Europe as the metric to be measured rather than viewed as a bonus and ‘happy to here’ mentality. Agreement also on the identification/scouting of players and the structure in doing so. I believe that BR will now make moves to build a backroom team of his own choosing and that he is currently speaking to individuals including JK who has a choice to make between us and Spurs. This will be reported back to the club in the coming days.

I was tempted not to even post this after what happened with Howe, which was so far down the line and didn’t happen but it is what it is.

Sounds like he's getting what Ange was promised and more.. regardless of your views of Rodgers if this happens its exciting times.. hopefully we are ready to jump to the next level.. about * time too

I hate myself for saying it but we've really landed on our feet here. Ange leaves unexpectedly early in his tenure and we end up with one of the most talented managers in our recent history and an extra £5 million in the bank. I'll never make the mistake of loving another Celtic manager...but as long as we're successful on the park, what else matters?

    Where's this from mate, KDS?

For what it's worth i do actually think the snakey wee creep will get our most significant transfer kitty assurances....otherwise he wouldn't have risked coming back. We're in a much better state than when he first took over (probably the best ever), with direct entry to the groups also....so time is also on his side..

It looks like we've promised him everything and from Desmond directly..

Let's hope our recruitment side have a big say in everything..

Genuinely no happy that it's him but what can we do. I just won't take to him but hopefully we're successful as *..
