I didn’t see any gradual improvements under the fat Aussie though. So I don’t really see the argument you’re trying to make.

If anything I thought we regressed somewhat in his second season… and it really shouldn’t take a manager 2 full euro campaigns to figure out that his team needs to defend a bit better to get results. The guy clearly didn’t have a clue what he was doing at that level of competition.

You’re highlighting a team that defended properly, as some sort of example of what he was trying to accomplish… but where is the evidence that he was turning us into something similar?

And I don’t agree with you that defending properly in Europe brings “lucky” results… this shows a significant lack of knowledge of the game on your part tbh.

Striking a balance is all anyone is talking about really.

People seem to be assuming that it’s either Angeball or backs to the wall defensive. There’s a whole chasm in between.

The issue I have is the idea that Ange’s approach would eventually click and we’d progress in Europe. Imo, with the standard of player we realistically have available to us, we would never have progressed in Europe with Angeball.

It was, and I feel as though I’m being kind here, exceptionally naive at times.

Ange didn't seem to have a plan B. It was to keep going till we score "we never stop" attack attack attack..That's OK in Scotland because we have better players but in Europe it ain't going to work.

It will work in Europe at a certain level for a few teams - the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Bayern, Madrid etc could probably play this way in the CL group stages and simply overwhelm teams (even then none of them are as all out attack as we were at times).

The issue is it relies on you having better players than the opposition, hence it being a successful approach for us domestically.

For me, if we want to progress in Europe we need to learn to control the tempo of a game, press intelligently and defend. None of that means we need to give up our philosophy or just pack the back line and hope for the best, but I’m absolutely convinced we wouldn’t be successful by just hoping that we eventually got much better at doing exactly what we were doing already.

They were also mid table when they won the europa.

    Seems like a fluke.

There were improvements under Ange. We weren't being played through as easily in the Champion's League as we were the previous season in the Europa League by Bodo for instance, apart from arguably at home in the second half to Madrid, who of course are on a completely different level. I'm not saying we were defensively solid or anything like that, but there were signs of better organisation. We also created a * ton of chances, more than PSG in the group stage. We also had more shots on target against Madrid home and away than anybody else in the Champion's League apart from City when they got knocked out. Things you conveniently ignore. It was not taking those chances and mistakes in defensive transitions which ultimately killed us.

Had Ange learnt anything for this time around? That would have remained to be seen, however the physical profile of player he was bringing in (Johnson, Iwata, Oh) at least suggested that he recognised the need to be stronger and more solid.

At any rate, it isn't just about Postecoglou. It's about putting in place a positive system which if stuck with and improved upon over a period of time, can bring results. Again, this is the way that every smart club in Europe is trying to bridge the gap, not with 10 men behind the ball for 82 minutes Kilmarnock garbage because we're * it at the thought of taking the odd drubbing.

I'm not against defending properly in Europe. We had to defend better under Ange to get results, that much is clear. I'm against setting up the team hoping to nick a 1-0 result off one of the big boys, probably once every 10 years. That is the weak, defeatist mentality.
