Forgive me for being clueless, but does he, or is this a light-hearted joke?

I don't find it weird at all. Maybe if you are Graham Potter or Eddie Howe you have earned the right to do that; but Maresca is unproven.

So, do you have a lot of experience as a manager?
Er, no, actually. Just a few months.
A few months at the highest level?
    No, the second tier.
Ah, but I imagine it was a very successful few months.
Er, actually, I failed completely and was sacked.
I see. So, er, do you have any experience as an assistant manager at least?
    No, I don't. Only as a first-team coach.
OK, OK. That's something. So you are 3rd in command, then?
No, er, I'm one of about half a dozen coaches.
Right, OK. You don't really tick any of the boxes to be honest. On the other hand, the best manager in the world is your boss, he must have seen some potential in you. We might be willing to make an exception...
Oh, wait. This is just my back up plan. First I want to see if I can get something better.

It depends what you mean. Do you mean if he speaks it in reality or if he speaks it in the world he has created in his own head?

In reality. Some people learn foreign languages because they find them interesting. Maybe Rodgers is one of those. I again have no clue if he actually does speak Japanese.

“Right, here's a little something I thought you might find interesting. As many of you know, I've been taking up Japanese. I wouldn't say I'm a master, but I reckon I can hold my own in a conversation.

A few weeks ago, I was speaking with the Tokyo Emerald Celtic Supporters Club. Fantastic group, real die-hard supporters. I had this notion to show them my appreciation, so I thought, 'Why not do it in their own language?'

So, there I was, on this call, a world away, and I started speaking in Japanese. You could hear the surprise on the other end. They were chuffed, and I've got to say, it was quite a moment for me. Felt good to connect on a level beyond football.

They were very kind, complimented me on my Japanese. It was a bit of a pat on the back for all those hours I've been putting into studying, you know.

But it was more than that. It reminded me of the depth of the bond between Celtic and our fans, wherever they may be. It’s a testament to the 'You'll Never Walk Alone' spirit that defines us. A reminder that no matter the language we speak, that connection, that shared passion transcends boundaries.”

Funnily enough, I'm one of those people and I used to be a member of a forum full of people even more into it than me. He doesn't strike me as one of those people at all. He is, however, a well-known bullshitter, so...
I wouldn't be that surprised if it turned out he spoke a bit of basic French or Spanish (perhaps even Irish), but I'm fairly confident he doesn't speak fluent Japanese.

Still get 17/2 on Rodgers for Leeds job. Hardly the odds for someone down to the last 2

To be fair, Rodgers will have to up his game if he wants to take back top spot in the blowhard league from Sam Allerdyce. Even Rodgers doesn't think that he's just as good as Pep and Klopp. :56:
