Celtic have held talks with young Italian boss Francesco Farioli about the prospect of taking over from Ange Postecoglou at Parkhead.

A meeting between club powerbrokers and 34-year-old Farioli - known in Italy as the ‘young De Zerbi’ - took place last week as Celtic chiefs continue their search for the Aussie’s replacement. Farioli’s two most recent managerial posts have been in Turkey with Fatih Karagumruck and Antalyaspor but he cut his teeth in coaching under Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi at Benevento and Sassuolo in his homeland and has the same all-out attacking philosophy as his mentor.

Celtic, who are continuing to look closely at trying to bring back Brendan Rodgers or make a move for Manchester City No 2 Enzo Maresca, are doing their due diligence on a number of alternatives - and Farioli is very much in their thoughts. The Barga-born coach did not have a big-time playing career but has risen through the coaching ranks after a successful spell in Qatar, which led to De Zebri adding him to his coaching staff. Farioli iskeen to make Glasgow his next destination but that could hinge on Rodgers and Maresca rejecting overtures in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Maresca endured a frightening postscript to Champions League success after his father went missing. Pep Guardiola’s assistant coach at Manchester City will speak to Celtic over the vacant manager’s post with the Istanbul showpiece now done and dusted, but Maresca’s chances of immediate celebrations in theaftermath of the 1-0 win over Inter Milan were halted after dad Pasquale disappeared.

During the match an announcement was made in the ground for Pascquale de Caro to make himself known to the nearest steward. The message was also shown on the big screens inside the 72,000-seater stadium.

Maresca was registered at birth with his mother’s surname. The club’s Twitter account to provide assistance to supporters also posted an appeal. It is unclear what happened for the alarm to have been raised but City have confirmed that Mr de Caro was found in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Celtic have held face-to-face talks with Brendan Rodgers over a stunning return to Parkhead as manager.

Chief executive Michael Nicholson and finance director Chris McKay flew by private jet to Mallorca, where Rodgers owns a home, on Saturday.

The Northern Irishman planned to take a sabbatical from football following his departure from Leicester City in April.

Despite nursing reservations over a return to the club he left in February 2019, the 50-year-old retains the support of major shareholder Dermot Desmond and is now weighing up the pros and cons of a second stint in Glasgow ahead of further discussions this week.

A return for Rodgers could potentially persuade Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy to remain at Parkhead.

Former Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou wants the long-serving No2 to join him at Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year contract.

However, the Scottish champions are reluctant to lose him and, with Rodgers’ long-standing assistant Chris Davies the frontrunner for the managerial vacancy at Swansea, the prospect of the Northern Irishman coming back could influence Kennedy’s decision.

Manchester City assistant Enzo Maresca is another name on the Celtic list of candidates to replace Postecoglou.

City secured the Champions League and Treble with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul on Saturday.

Keen to strike out on his own as a manager, Italian Maresca placed talks over his future on hold until the game was done.

Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell attended a meeting of the executive board of the European Club Association before attending the final at the Ataturk Stadium on Saturday.

Daniel Farke has also thrown his hat into the ring for the Celtic job after leaving Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 46-year-old German spent four years in England with Norwich City and Sky Germany claim he has held initial talks over a move to Glasgow.

Bodo/Glimt coach Kjetil Knutsen is another under consideration.

He would do well and is one the best managers we've ever had. Like right up there as close to thee best.

Would be stunned if he actually had any interest whatsoever in returning.

Why because now he'd be up against the mighty Beale?
The only way we'd struggle is if VAR anomalies went into over drive.

If VAR had been used as it should they would have been about 20 points behind us this year. They were getting off with legit handballs and we were getting done for total joke decisions.

If the money men have flew oot to speak to Rodgers then there has to be serious interest from him for the job, whatever the opinions are on him, his return would be box office.

I'd agree if that's happened. Is it legit that we've been out on a flight or just another rumour.

Was thinking that. Cannae be normal for your Chief Financial Officer fly with you for "talks". Has he attended any other talks? Then again it is the smsm. Very scattergun with the names, which are all over Celtic forums already.

The wheels have been in motion from both ends with Rodgers for days.

That’s not to say it’s a shoe in though, still plenty obstacles in the way.
