John Kennedy

Celtic are blocking assistant manager John Kennedy from joining Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham, sources have told Football Insider.

A clause in Postecoglou’s Hoops contract stopped him from taking members of the club’s staff with him to his next club.




It is believed that Celtic are exploiting that clause as they look to stop an exodus of their coaches to north London

Postecoglou also wants coach Gavin Strachan and analyst Greg Wallace to join him in north London when he officially takes charge on July 1.




The Australian was appointed Spurs manager on Tuesday after two years at Celtic in which he won back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles and a domestic treble this season.

He has signed a four-year contract with Tottenham that runs until the summer of 2027



Kennedy, who had been a first-team coach and then assistant to previous managers Neil Lennon, Ronny Deila, Brendan Rodgers and Postecoglou, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League club.



The former Hoops player, who had a 10-year spell cut short by a serious knee injury, was also Celtic caretaker boss in 2021 following Lennon’s departure.


The Glasgow giants previously stepped in to persuade Kennedy from linking up with Rodgers in the Premier League, when he quit for Leicester City in February 2019.

He has a glowing reputation in Scottish football and is seen as having played a huge role in the club’s dominance over the last decade.

 

Just sounds like the board are utterly * off ans gonna make everything as difficult as possible for Ange..

From taking backroom staff to whacking massive fees on players..

Yeah I'd be surprised if something wasn't worked out if Kennedy says he's interested in moving, if we force him to stay then does that mean an incoming manager isn't getting the choice to bring their own staff in from the start either, could put some off the job.

 

That was my thought when I saw that first. I have no issues with Kennedy at all wanting to go after the length of service and what he has been part of with us. So hopefully this is just us playing hard ball and maximizing getting every penny we can from Tottenham.

 

Theres a clause in the contract stating he can’t take any club staff but he’s still trying to anyway?

 

Agree with all of the above comments, take them to the * cleaners.

Also maybe means we'll be back to demanding higher fees for players, after letting JJ and GG go for lower than expected.

 

Its good the Club are telling them no and showing they wont be dictated to or walked over by them.

Another telling wee snippet emerges about Ange and his character by the looks of it.

 

That's what I like to see!! Indifferent to JK staying but if it makes life difficult for the lying * good!! At this point anyone doubting that Ange did the dirty on us and lead us on incase he didn't get the Spurs job is kidding themselves.

Comp said to be around £5-7m for a guy on a one year contract (in other words pay off)

I don't think the club are trying to make things difficult but just get what they feel they deserve or contractually entitled to. We then need to bring in a new coaching team on top of a manager.

 

Can't blame us.

Spurs will be looking at finding a loophole or common ground (compensation).

We're playing hardball because we've been blindsided. Can't blame us.

I can't imagine we'll stop anyone going to Spurs but I'm delighted were making it as hard as possible.

Which is what I meant. You don't get what you are owed by being a pushover and accepting their first offer. Be difficult, play hard hall squeeze them for every penny. We clearly did over comp for Ange.

 

Kennedy is regarded as an excellent coach. Rodgers and now Postecogelou wanted to take him with them. Ange….go * yerself MATE. Leave our best players and coaches well alone.

 

Think he's been promised a crack at the top gig and when Ange left and it hasn't happened he's decided to go to England get his name out always the bridesmaid never the bride

I would make them stay for one year to allow continuity, * Spurs and Ange, if he wants them next year then all and good but we need to ensure the players feel stable and that new manager and his team can get bedded in then they can go I’ll even give them a lift

 

Yep, * him. I'm liking this, if true.

 

That's good from our board, fair play to them.

Still think they'll both leave, but not without a decent payday for us.

 

Old saying if players or coaches don't want to be here let them go and really don't want people there from the previous management as the new manager might have his own backroom team and the rumour at the time Howe didn't want Kennedy and Strachan there .
