Then why did we rebuff all attempts by Vitoria to include and option to buy in the deal?

We will never know for sure but at the same time it could just as feasible that Celtic didn't like the figures the club were offering so decline to add such a option because whether he has a future here or not... the club still demand/expect a certain fee to be paid.

Mikey is no doubt a talented young man but in the end he won't be getting ahead of Maeda, Haksobanovic, Jota or Abada (that said if Abada is sold he may have a slither of hope but would mean being played out of position down the right)

Staying here, he'll do well to get anything over 400 minutes of game time next season.

He’d be good for Aberdeen or Hibs, has pace and trickery but no end product and poor decision making.

Out of all the loanees, the only one I could see coming back and getting a chance is Montgomery.

A big summer and pre-season ahead for Mikey Johnston no question. The loan in Portugal has been good for him and if Abada does leave this summer there is an opportunity to show he can fill that role in the squad.

Injury history wise he makes James Forrrest look like a physically toned athlete and as l have said before his name (Mikey) for a grown man makes me * cringe

Well we kind of do know because Ange has explained that he knows Mikey had the talent but has been hampered by injuries and that the reason for the loan was to give Mikey a chance to prove himself at a good level by playing regular first team football and he couldn't promise him that at Celtic this season so a loan move was the fairest thing to do to given him that chance.

I said he would do well to get anything over 400 minutes because he just isn't getting ahead of named players.

I stand by that regardless how he's done in Portugal... there is nothing I've seen in him that he can offer that is better suited or more effective than the players Ange has signed for the club.

He is rightly below them in the pecking order... yes he might get a pre season, but so many fringe players have and it means * all.

Mikey is a talent for sure... but he has no future at celtic

    Just can't get enough
Give him the pre season and see how he does. I see 3 outcomes

He does well and because a key squad player.

He does well and gets an offer elsewhere.

He doesn't really do well and goes out on loan again.

So we get a player, or a fee, or get his wages paid elsewhere.

Another start today. Vitoria won and sealed a top 6 finish (5th) and secured their European spot next season. MJ won't be there for it but played his part. What a cracking loan move this has been for him.

Mikey Johnston has set his sights on a return to Celtic next season - and forcing his way into Ange Postecoglou ’s side.

The 24-year-old winger has spent this campaign on loan at Portuguese top flight outfit Vitoria Guimaraes and has excelled. He’s been a key player in their bid for a Europa League spot behind big guns Benfica, Porto, Braga and Sporting Lisbon. But Johnston says he’ll be back at Celtic for pre-season as a better player than the one which left Glasgow

And in an exclusive interview with Mailsport , he revealed that he’s still determined to make an impact under Postecoglou. Johnstonplayed 20 times for the Hoops boss last term, which included a start in the 2021 League Cup Final win over Hibs. After impressing for Guimaraes - as well as making his international debut for Republic of Ireland in March - he hasn’t given up on a future at Parkhead

Johnston said: “What happens next season isn’t really down to me. I’ve given it everything I’ve got over here and I’ve enjoyed it

But if I can go back to Celtic and play, that’s definitely something I want to do. I’m 24 and this is the most games I’ve played in a season. I want to build on that, not go back the way.

“I’d love to play for Celtic next season but we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve always thought I could play for the club on a regular basis. I’ve never felt I wasn’t good enough to be there.

Once you do that, you’re defeated. Obviously, I’ve watched as many games as I possibly could over here. They’ve done brilliantly this season and I want to be involved in that. Any player would.

I reckon they’ll have watched me this season in Portugal. I’ve had a few messages from people at the club.”

Johnston insists he’s improved physically and tactically during his spell at Guimaraes. The former Scotland Under-21 star feels as fit as he’s ever done in his career so far.

And now he’s ready to show Postecoglou that he can rely on him in a Hoops jersey. He said: “I’ve love to gain Ange’s trust. I think he did trust me in spells and it was up to me to produce

I know I didn’t always do that and there’s so much competition for places at Celtic. But he started me in a cup final not that long ago

So I think he does trust me. He’s been brilliant for the club and he’s got the team playing some fantastic football.”
