In his 30s and battered by injuries, plenty of players might still say the right things about wanting to play, but really be happy to sit with their feet up for a few years letting the money roll in. Wouldn't blame him either, we're the ones that * it giving him the length of contract and good wages.

Yep. Our fault for handing him that sort of deal..

I'd be happy as * sitting on my *, collecting a wage and no doing myself any more damage..

Don’t know why so many spend so much energy on him and his signing.

He didn’t work out, he’s frozen out and he’ll leave in the summer more than likely. It’s no one’s fault.

    It's whoever sanctioned it's fault..

That length of contract was criminal to absolutely everyone when it was first announced..

I actually wanted him in. Rated him as a player.....but never on a 4 year with his age and history..

no guarantee he will be gone in the summer either. We have really smartly streamlined the squad over the past two windows. Needs urgently moved on

The length of contract was clearly required to offset the fact we’d have been offering less wages than other interested clubs he would have had bottom end of Prem/top of Championship.

    No biggy.

Must be a great situation to be in. Four years on really good money and you know the manager doesn’t want you to do anything. Nice work if you can get it.

In his last appearances he showed his talent, but as I said, it’s just not worked out for him with us and if we could move him on the we probably would.

Not seen often enough, testament to those guys in front of him.

A crazy contract given to a player whose career has been blighted by injury. That’s not his fault.

I like him and have no animosity towards him, but age and injury has most certainly caught up with him, which is a shame because on his day his reading of the game and passing was great to watch.

Edit - the wage thing does bug me though. It is wasted when he really is not going to get a game unless the midfield is decimated by injury. Could that money have been used to appease GG?

    just a thought

Naecunt knows what wage he’s on or the structure though. Could be 4 years pay as you play with a smaller basic, could be a massive wedge, could be basically * all.

    Who knows?

We have the money to appease GG just now, we just don’t think it’s worth it and would have ramifications in the squad.

Dont know if you can say that. Him going in the summer means someone's got to want to pay money for his signing and also it means he'll need to want to go. I cant see either of those two things happening.

Why does somebody needs to pay to sign him? We can just let him go.

well thats true I suppose. But with a 4 year contract he's just gonna want to sit on his wages unless someone offers him more wages which is not likely

Seemed like a good idea at the time. Doesn't seam to have workedout, but I bear him no malice

Totally with you there. I thought he could still do a job for us and wanted us to sign McCarthy but handing him a 4 year deal given his injury issues made absolutely no sense at all.

Celtic are looking to offload James McCarthythis summer.

The midfielder joined back in 2021 on a four-year deal taking him through to 2025 which means he still has two years left on his contract at Parkhead. It's been a failed transfer for both parties thus far with the Irishman making just 27 appearances over two seasons including just six starts in green and white.

Macca, 32, has not had his bad luck to seek in that time, it must be said, with a hamstring issue knocking his time in Glasgow and ruling him out previously when it looked like he might earn some more game time from the bench

The Hoops had planned to allow McCarthy to leave the club last summer and were also open to offers in January with a loan stint even mooted as they looked to free up the wage bill.

And Football Scotland understands they are, again, willing to do business with any interested parties who may be keeping a close eye on the former Wigan and Crystal Palace midfielder.

Ange Postecoglou has the likes of Aaron Mooy, Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate in front of McCarthy in the pecking order while youngster Ben Summers has even been given the nod over the veteran in recent matches.
