Will Celtic ever get someone in that will challenge for Jimmy McGrory’s record goals total

 

No.

*, even when McGrory was here, Maley tried to sell him to Arsenal in order to finance the redevelopment of Celtic Park... and how did Maley & the Board reward McGrory for his loyalty to Celtic and refusing to leave? Ensured he was the lowest paid player at the club for years afterwards, and still McGrory wouldn't leave. That is because he was Celtic, through and through and the thought of playing elsewhere was not something he was willing to consider.

Even if a player was to come halfway close to his record, who would agree to remain under those same sort of circumstances - the player or the club reject the outrageous transfers and wages? And yet, McGrory did.

Let alone someone who was brought in, be it from thr academy or from another club, would they have the wherewithall to get up near McGrory scoring better than 40+ goals a season for 13-14 seasons? Nevermind injuries (and McGrory had his fair share of those also), loss of form at any point or not having their head turned elsewhere during that period - be it for better money or another challenge etc.

Besides, the sheer number of goals McGrory scored on average per season has to be put into some context also for the era. An era in which was set up and geared towards goal scoring over defending - and not just Celtic but across Scotland. That is not to say he wasn't a phenom, because he was, and relatively diminutive but scored an insane amount of goals in the air (and hence why one of his nicknames, lol), but look at the leagues top scorers throughout that era. McGrory was only the top scorer like 3 or 4 times. Yes, he was consistently right up there when others would drop off, but doing that level of consisteny goal scoring season in, season out is again insane.
