This is it, if you go back to this time last year or there abouts we were all watching a Japanese friendly for when Maeda could be on a plane back and if he had a chance at making the derby game.

Fair play to Giakoumakis he really kicked on there onwards and was a big part of winning the league and started this season well too.

He was good yesterday but his form had dipped recently both sides of the break, all be it has game time was limited.

He does lack technically but has been one of few players I can recall who we signed started so poorly and injury disrupted and went on to make a success of it.

He has also just become a dad, which will probably have brought life into a different perspective. He’s on around £600k a year at us at 28 but feels he could earn around double that. he probably hasn’t been on anything close to what we have been paying him until now.

Therefore, to make enough to be set for the glam life without doing anything post career he either needs to play for a number of season to mid to late 30’s, given his injury record isn’t great for niggles or longer term absences seems unlikely. Or get a big contract now for the next 4 years and he looks like having opted for the later, so fair play to him as that seems more certain.

Best of luck to Giakoumakis he has been very good value for us and hopefully pulls in a decent fee too.

Will be sad to see him go, but yesterday was an improvement as he's been * poor in recent times, guess with the transfer news

Bit surprised we're he is going.

Some media saying bid accepted for him and really should have his replacement in first before we let him go as we saw what happened when we let Graig Gordon go thinking Foster was signing and that ended up in a disaster.

I'd imagine his replacement is in place mate, just a case of signing the contract. I'd be shocked if we let Giako go without guarantees elsewhere. Obviously that doesn't always pan out as you expect, but id be really surprised if we don't see his replacement - looks like Cho - sign this week.

Sad to see him go but not to fussed about it. He has been pretty bad for a while now, even with the limited minutes he has got. His last game was his best for a while. Big strong strikers usually kill it in Japan, so no doubt he will be one of the best if not the best st in the league over there.

Has there been any mention of what the fee is?

I'll always remember him fondly but he's absolutely a player we can improve on. Hopefully Cho does just that.

Kinda left scratching my head with this. Break for the WC, everything all good. Talks of a new contract. Talks stall, few murmurs of refusing to sign, a random insta post, dropped for a game and has remained on the bench since. Now it seems he's gone.

    * happened. He's still a big asset for the team and offers us something different. I get what the boss wants, the boss gets and if a player doesn't want to be here, then punt.

Just so quick and over little. Wish him all the best. Hope its for decent coin and Cho is close then...

Ange did say not to get too attached to players.

For the career he's had prior to signing with us, he's done mighty fine here, this could have been a whole lot worse in hindsight. But in the end stats have shown that with Kyogo leading the line, as an entire 11 we score way more goals so he was always going to struggle to cement that spot barring any season ending injuries to Kyogo.

He was so instrumental in getting us over the line last year, that won’t be forgotten. I think unfortunately that GG is getting the fallout from our champions league firing blanks campaign. GG unfortunately wasn’t able to force his way into the team and make the position his own, that meant someone had to go and it’s him. If the club wanted him to stay then the club would have found a way.

It’ll be a big payday for him down there and I wish him all the best, thanks for the memories big man.

The way we now are signing players from numerous clubs in Japan and now sending players the other way just shows the high level of respect going both ways in the relationship. Be sorry to see him go, the form he caught this time last season was a joy to watch. Just really think Ange has an eye on what he wants his squad to look at come September/ October coming.

If this is true then we need to get a move on with a replacement and 3rd option too

    Just can't get enough
Some fans must've missed the memo when Ange said not to get attached to players. Wouldn't surprise me if some grown men are holding some sort of candle lit vigils for him tonight. Get a grip man, big man did well for us but he's nowhere near irreplaceable, he doesn't even get into the top 5 strikers we've had in the last 10 year fs. Yes he's good physically but woeful technically, if physical alone is what we're after then let's just sign Lyndon Dykes. Cho is 6ft 3 and scores bullet headers for fun. Is fast and strong. Time to move on folks. GG was never good enough for CL and tbh Kyogo probably isn't either.

Reports in Japan, meanwhile, state that Urawa — bankrolled by Mitsubishi — are in discussions with Celtic over a transfer fee, with ‘negotiations progressing well’.

Currently earning £11,000 a week in Glasgow, Giakoumakis is frustrated by both his salary and his lack of game time.

Linked with Denmark’s FC Midtjylland last week, big-spending Urawa want the Greek and Brazilian Thiago Santana to beef up their attacking options.

Giakoumakis last scored for Celtic in October, but hit the woodwork twice after appearing as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock

Ange Postecoglou swerved speculation over the striker’s future, saying: ‘I just deal with what’s in front of me. Giako has been working hard but Kyogo is in great form, scoring every week. So he’s having to come on and make a contribution — and he hasn’t flinched from that.’

As cynical as it may sound, it's one thing and one thing only: money.

You don't leave Celtic to go to a * team in the J-League for anything other than financial purposes mate. Especially in your prime. Its the same reason Juranovic is about to join some Italian cannon fodder that sounds like an online bank.

Clearly it isn't for footballing reasons. If they had better offers from better clubs, of course they'd go there instead. But as it currently stands, they want more dollar; we won't pay it, so they'll go to any * who will.

I'm genuinely not that bothered by it in all honesty. They're looking out for themselves but they are two bizarre moves and I don't think Ange or the club are particularly arsed either.

If I’m not mistaken, only 3 players have arrived at the J-league for a fee of €5 million or more. I’m happy to be corrected.

So I’m not expecting much for Giakoumakis. But if it’s enough to cover how we paid for him and his salary over the year and a half, we can’t really complain considering how much he contributed to the league title last year.
