Good move for Kenny. He will do very well with Queens Park under Owen Coyle.
Queens Park are worth keeping an eye on. They are on the up and up.

Sligo Rovers fans are set to be disappointed as local lad Johnny Kenny looks set to join Shamrock Rovers on loan, with a possible option to buy at the end of the season long loan.

Kenny joined Celtic earlier this year, and has been on loan with Queen’s Park in recent weeks, a move that has not worked out.

It’s understood Kenny was interested in returning to the League of Ireland on loan and was in talks with a number of clubs to try and jump-start his career as first team football in Scotland has been difficult to find.

Sligo Rovers manager John Russell is understood to have met Kenny on a number of occasions to discuss a return to the Bit O’Red on loan, with those talks very positive.

Celtic were believed to be happy to send Kenny on loan to his former club, as the youngster has worked with John Russell and Ryan Casey previously.

But, it now appears that Rovers are going to be left disappointed as Kenny looks set to join Shamrock Rovers instead, a move that is a huge disappointment to the club who were very hopeful of luring him back for the season.

The chance to play European football with the Hoops, and fight for the title would be a big draw for Kenny.

Rovers will actually host their Tallaght counterparts on the opening weekend of the season in February.

Got a feeling this signals a major shift in moving players on that's never gonna make it here. This could be the next stage in Anges plan, last year he was full focused on fixing the first team, probably had more time to assess and see who's making it and who's not. Like previously discussed the youth team need a complete overhaul, there is no point with having a youth team full of players that have no hope of a professional contract. Here's hope that investment goes into the B team soon.

Pretty poor. Did he start for most of those games?

Either way not a great sign, shame as that one game he played last year thought he was ok.

When was the last loan we made to the lower leagues and they then stepped up and performed for the first team? Has anyone been lower than the championship and made it with us?

    Not that I can recall.

Ralston with Dundee United is as close as I can think of.

Weren’t they in the prem then? And he never even played much there either if I remember right, was only in Perth he made an impact. I actually think based on the recent moves; any loan to the lower divisions puts our players back a few steps as they almost certainly never make it

Definitely Championship for Dundee Utd, saw him a couple of times myself when he was their and he was their standout player despite other reports.

My mums from Dundee and her family are Utd so got plenty of feedback on him. He played every game he was there.

Probably had less of an impact at St Johnstone in all honesty but again played every game they played a RB, again caught a few games he played when up there and he was decent, even then he was doing a few defence splitting passes.

Agree that if they can't make it in the lower divisions they won't make it here. We'd be better lending them to the second leagues in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal as at least that would give them a different footballing experience.

Shamrock Rovers F.C. is delighted to announce the loan signing of striker Johnny Kenny from Celtic.

Johnny joins the Hoops on a season-long loan deal and Rovers’ Head Coach Stephen Bradley is happy to have secured the move. In revealing the new striker today, Bradley said “We like his attributes and the way he plays the game. We’ve liked him and monitored him for quite some time. We tried to get him a couple of years back and it didn’t quite come off so we’re delighted to get him, because he has some really good attributes that we feel will improve the team.”

“I think we’ve got really good options up front and when you add John into that mix, it only adds to it. We have Rory, Graham and Aaron and then when you add Simon and Neil to that, we’ve got real pace in that final third. But we’re always looking to improve in every area of the pitch, and we feel Johnny represents a chance for us to improve. He gives us a different option to what we have and a different type of player to what we have at the moment.”

“We know what he’s about and we’ve seen it first-hand, so there are no surprises for us or for him. He knows the league and we know Johnny. In this team, with the chances we create and the way he plays, I think he’ll really enjoy it and score goals.”

“I went and sat down with Johnny a few weeks back and we had a couple of hours together and a good chat. One thing that really stood out for me was that he’s really motivated to improve and kick on again. He’s still very young and there’s still lots of growth left in him. We feel we can help him fulfil that potential and he obviously feels he can fulfil that potential here, so it looks like a good fit for both. I’m delighted to get him in, and I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Johnny came through the underage system at his native Sligo Rovers, playing for their U15s, U17s and U19s. The forward was included in Liam Buckley’s senior squad in 2021 and made his league debut against Dundalk at the Showgrounds in March. Johnny scored 12 goals for the Bit O’Red, including one in their UEFA Europa Conference League tie against FH Hafnarfjordur of Iceland. He also made his Ireland Under-19 international debut later that year. In January 2022, Johnny left Sligo to sign for Celtic in a five-year deal. First team opportunities were limited in Scotland, with the 19-year-old making 12 appearances on loan at Championship club Queen’s Park.
