Technically i think they were as good, but not close as fit as the players around these days. There are so much technology at the training facilities and supplements/diets and all that crap that makes huge difference now i believe.

Today's players are too lightweight. Today's football is like yesteryears girls football. We * dances and haircuts. Wouldn't stand a chance against the true greats from the past.

Too lightweight…in any hypothetical game between the best just now and in years gone past the best just now walks it because of their athletic capabilities.

Faster, bigger, stronger, better stamina and everything in between. Sports science, nutrition, professionalism are all night and day in comparison.

Players play act more, aye, but they’re definitely not more lightweight.

Put any of the new players against some * who is gonna chop through the back of him….but get the ball….with the old age refs who wave play on. Nae chance any player from now would get up or ride that.

And you think if you put one of the modern day players who are bigger, faster and stronger in against an ‘older day hard man’ with the same rule set that they’re going to just shirk a tackle?

Imagine a Pepe or a Suarez or one of these types of players with the leash off…

Pepe and Suarez are both soft * who shirk and play act themselves, they’d get tanked by those guys

Best players now vs best players of a couple of generations ago isn’t remotely competitive.

Technically miles ahead and athletically an entirely different animal. They may as well be playing different sports.

And Messi is the very clear GOAT.

I think we are finally seeing, arguably the difference in attitudes towards the game coming through between Ronaldo and Messi.

    Messi always clear of Ronaldo.

    Ronaldo making Zlatan seem humble.

One thing I've never really agreed with is this notion that Messi has * given ability whereas Ronaldo has had to work hard to get where he is.

Both have had to work like mad to get to where they are. Both have * given ability. Messi just has more.

Forget anything else, just watch the wee man play fitbaw, there's nobody better, plenty of great goalscorers and great technicians, but nothing that comes close to what Messi can do.

You can talk about World cups and a talented Barca team, but just his individual ability as an all round footballer is the best i've ever seen, opinions will differ but you can only call it as you see it.

How did they achieve near enough the same?

Maradona never dominated world football for 15+ years.

If he chucked playing at 24 I’d still think he was the best player of all time.

    Undeniable GOAT for me.

    - The best goal scorer of all time
    - The best playmaker of all time
    - The best dribbler of all time (one could argue Maradona but that's subjective)
    - One of the best passers of all time

How many players come along and are the best of the best in EVERY single aspect of the game? Ronaldo is better at headering obviously but Messi can't help his height and still scored one of the best headed goals I've seen in a CL final.

Messi is an alien, its just Ronaldo fan boys and older folk nostalgic about the game who try to claim otherwise. My Dad's in his 60's and before Messi was around he told me Maradona was the GOAT. Speaking to him the other day and he said it's Messi now.

This is the best video of Messi I've seen I think. Take 10 minutes out of your day and enjoy this, it's a thing of beauty.
