Sorry mate, but this is utter pish. The old “well look what happened across the city” argument is ridiculous. It’s used constantly to defend the fact that we went into almost every qualifying campaign under prepared, and because of this, we were papped out repeatedly by teams we probably should have been beating. Of course there is no guarantees of navigating the qualifiers, but the managers were not given the best chance to do so under his stewardship.

Uch come on mate. Players aren’t going to sign for us unless we are in the CL. Hence why we had to qualify before making signings. Only reason we got business done early as soon as he left is because for first time in years we were straight into CL with no qualifiers.

I’m not saying he was golden but defo doesn’t deserve all the stick he gets from certain “Celtic fans”.

    Another fallacy.

Very few players are going to sign a 4+ year deal on the basis of six games; it comes down to money.

Furthermore, we had business done fairly seamlessly under Ange without guaranteed Champions League football.

You realise that in 2003 we still rivalled many premier league clubs wages wise? It was a completely different time back then.

He oversaw the most successful domestic period ever in our history’s which nobody else managed. You seem to brush all his achievements away and only look at the negatives. Nobodies going to run our club absolutely perfect.

Bringing in a football dinosaur in Lennon after having Rodgers was another major blunder that is on him.

Decent players, yes. It’s the biggest tournament in club football for * sake.

You realise that his wage always competed with CEO’s down South? Not just until 2003.

Ahh right, so the players we signed under Ange prior to there being guaranteed CL football are not decent players?

Well on that basis you still need to qualify to have the money for decent players.

Ange had his own ideas. He knew a market which nobody else was interested in very well. He barely needed scouts or anything. These players were crying out for a European club to come in for them. Completely different from other years.

Completely different. Already explained in a previous post.

Yes but ceos aren’t getting anywhere close to what players are. What’s your point?

So we went into a game against a poor Maribor team having only brought in Berget on loan purely because we weren’t guaranteed CL football?

Mate, these players were playing in a league that nobody knew about and were not interested in. It wasn’t as if we were competing with big clubs for kyogos signature for example. They were crying out for European clubs to come in for them.

It just so happened Ange knew the market very well he had no need for scouts for example. To compare it to other years is just silly.

The point is, Lawwell’s wages constantly competed, in fact, bettered ones of teams down South, all the while he was more than happy to tell us that we couldn’t compete with teams down South when it come to transfers.

As I said, I’m not saying everything he done was perfect. You’re picking and choosing certain seasons to your liking to debate. He over saw the most successful time in our history domestically pal.

It’s not silly at all. You stated that we couldn’t bring in decent players when Lawwell was here as we weren’t guaranteed Champions League football, that utter myth has been blown to pieces by the fact we have done so since he left.

The point some people are willfully ignorant to, is that there was no hiding place for Lawwell when the whole world seen the culmination of his strategies the year we lost the 10.

He got away with it for years due to the huns not being there to challenge us, and when they finally got their first title (although there were MANY mitigating circumstances that contributed to our complete collapse) Lawwells misjudgements were laid bare.

You don't preside over that big a failure and just continue as is. An intelligent man, as he certainly is, looks at where it went wrong and learns from it.

He stepped down and so ended Peter Lawwells influence as the main man in the running of Celtic Football Club. That is not to say he can't have a part to play, or he can't still use his vast experience to help us in the future, but the club has moved on from his style of premiership.

Michael Nicholson, who remember the majority of us were raging about getting the CEO gig, has his own way of running things, and along with Chris McKay, Mark Lawwell and crucially, Ange Postecoglou, have already steadied the ship and even pushed it forward faster than any of us expected.

The current board and management have done a stellar job so far, and will continue to do so. You know why? Because they all want Celtic to be they best club possible, and have plenty of experience in how NOT to let things fall by the way side.

But of course, some people just love to be raging at all times, so best just to keep yourself right and laugh at the * :giggle1:
