He deserves praise for winning that ball, no doubt about that. But there's a reason McCarthy is used almost exclusively in these types of situations, where we've lost control of a game and are basically seeing out a lead. His strengths revolve around winning the ball, getting stuck in, clearing danger.

If we'd started him in O'Riley's position today, any pace or rhythm we had to our game would have ground to a halt. It was already impacted by McGregor's absence, but it would have been worse.

Our winning goal doesn't happen if their guy doesn't pull up and fall to floor allowing McCarthy to step in.

Everything prior to our 2nd showed just how ill-equipped a midfield of Mooy, McCarthy and Abildgaard is to Ange's system, we were under the cosh ffs leading to their late equaliser.

Never going to be a starter but I think he’s done well at times coming off the bench. Thought he had an impact midweek and again today with the secondary assist. His pass to Taylor in the Leipzig game was class.

He could well play an important role while McGregor is out, coming on to see games out or help us battle for control.

Getting more time off the bench than expected; he must be doing something right in training for Ange to be playing him

Celtic will listen to offers for James McCarthy in January, sources have told Football Insider.

The Republic of Ireland international, 31, has struggled to make an impact at Parkhead and is not part of Ange Postecoglou’s long-term plans.

Celtic are keen to free up space on their wage bill and find a new club for McCarthy in the second half of the season.

But the Glasgow giants face a major battle to shift McCarthy, who signed a four-year contract worth around £20,000-a-week when he joined in the summer of 2021.

He has failed to justify that deal with just four Scottish Premiership starts in his two seasons at the club – all of which came during the 2021-22 campaign.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder has played a total of 62 minutes from the substitutes’ bench this term across domestic and European competition.

McCarthy has seen a number of midfield reinforcements come in ahead of him during the off-season, with Aaron Mooy and Oliver Abildgaard enjoying game time at his expense.

    Kyogo. A phenomenon
Has been a very poor signing that looked made in panic at the time.

we won’t clear him off the wage bill. Will prove a very expensive mistake

I'm sure a lot of championship clubs would take a punt, £20k a week is League one wages down south.

Nobody is taking a punt on him at 20k a week (except Celtic apparently)

No it's not - maybe the odd player from a relegated Championship club but not your average League 1 wages by a long shot

Yeah guess you're right. Average championship wage then!

    Highest Earners in League One
In League One, the highest earners are Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady and Lincoln City’s Morgan Rogers. Both players earn approximately £19,000 per week or £988,000 annually. There is only a handful of League One Players earning more than £10,000 per week or more.

In a leaked report from the Daily Mail in 2020, it was found that the average highest earner at each League One club was £4,753 per week or £247,188 per year. In the report, only 15 of the 24 League One clubs had responded.

    Average League 1 Salary
Reporting of finances in the lower leagues of English football is fuzzy at best. However, it is estimated that the average League One salary is between £1,700 and £2,500 per week. These figures come to between £88,400 and £130,000 per year.

What is the average salary in the EFL Championship?
In 2006, the annual EFL Championship salary was around £150,000 a year. That averages out at about £3,000 a week, which is still a large amount as compared to the average British worker. After 15 years, the overall salary has risen dramatically, with players now earning almost £29,000-per-week on average.

There’s no chance in * he’s earning 20k a week basic here. Maybe if he was playing every game and contributing but even we won’t have given someone like McCarthy a 4 year deal on 20k a week.

Matt O'Riley was on £800 a week when playing in League One for MK Dons.

Championship wages are pretty much in line with what the old firm pay actually. So there might be one of the richer clubs willing to take him.
