With all of the international Celts rested for the first pre-season match of the 2022/23 season, the game against Wiener Viktoria was a perfect opportunity for some of the younger players to make their mark.

Johnny Kenny was one of those that featured from the start of the 7-0 victory and in his first outing with the first team, the Irish forward bagged two goals in the opening 45 minutes.

While the goals will get the headlines, overall it was a convincing all-around performance from the striker before the 19-year-old was replaced at half-time, and he was delighted to be involved and make a positive impression.

Speaking exclusively to Celtic TV after the win, he said: “It’s been good to be out on the pitch with the first team for the first time and top it off with two goals and a 7-0 win.

“The first goal Mikey Johnston did well and I knew, having played with him, before that he would find me at the back post.

“For the second one, Alexandro Bernabei whipped it in and I got a bit lucky but I had to be alive to finish it first time.

'Overall, it’s been a good start to pre-season but we need to keep going.'

Having signed from Sligo Rovers in January after impressing with the League of Ireland outfit, Kenny joined with an injury that would keep him out for the first few months of his Hoops career, before returning to feature for the B team.

The first team is where he will be looking to make his name, and being away on the trip to Austria and training with the stars of Ange Postecoglou has been an eye-opener for him so far.

Speaking about training, Kenny said: “The gaffer wants us to press high and get after teams at the top end of the pitch because that’s where we can get goals if we capitalise on the press.

'The intensity levels are sky-high and it’s been very tough but enjoyable at the same time.'

“I’m getting to learn off the likes of Kyogo, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Albian Ajeti, so really I can’t go far wrong.”

He looks a natural finisher, good pace and energy as well getting about. Another one that could flourish with a loan move.

Built like the side of a fiver.

Again, like Lawal, a loan move could do wonders.

I hope he's involved (even as third choice striker) with the first team or allowed out on loan. A year with the B team in the Lowlands will do nothing for him at this stage of his career.

CARLISLE United are interested in Celtic striker Johnny Kenny.

The 19-year-old joined the Hoops from Sligo Rovers last season.

Celtic are now looking at options for the striker as they look to get him more first-team exposure.

The English League Two side are one of the clubs who are keen on landing the Irishman.

Kenny is attracting interest from both sides of the border with the Cumbrians amongst those who believe he can add more firepower to their squad.

The frontman impressed when he went away with Ange Postecoglou’s first-team for their pre-season training camp.

Think this would be a great move for him. League 2 football will do him wonders and great first team experience.

Heard he was saying coming to Celtic was the biggest mistake of his life. Must’ve thought he’d come straight into the first team haha. Never gonna get in over Kyogo and GG. We do tend to buy players with potential and just loan them out to * league two or Scottish championship teams which surely can’t be too beneficial

Yeah it’s not necessarily a high standard of football. Playing first team for Sligo be better or surely first team in league one where lots of the younger lads could easily find teams. Shame though cause we need something to entice young talents to wanna be here

CELTIC starlet Johnny Kenny has joined Championship Queen’s Park on loan.

SunSport understands the ambitious Spiders have been keen to strike an agreement with the champions for the Irish youth ace throughout the summer.

Interest in the former Sligo Rovers frontman has been strong, including English clubs.

But Owen Coyle’s men have got their man and Kenny, who cost Celtic a six figure sum last season, can now look forward to regular action after being on the fringes of Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Kenny signed a five year deal for the Hoops in January but soon suffered a knee injury.

He has yet to make a competitive debut but Coyle sees him as a terrific prospect who can play a vital role in the second tier.
