Personally think he’ll do great at Aberdeen, he’ll suit their style more. I’ve no doubt he’s good enough for the league but just not good enough for us unfortunately.

I've been reading the majority of Sheep fans reactions on Twitter to the loan signing of Scales and oh my, what a bunch of miserable entitled twats they are. Their club ended 10th fs. He will probably end up their POTY this season and still get stick. Toxic fan base.

We paid 600k Euros I think, he's not one to just throw away, see how he gets in and then we can talk about a fee

They've just been given 5 mill or that and probably end up with another couple..

No favours. Can't stand these sheep * *..

Their whole signing of him was raging that it was a loan from us and slagging the Christie loan..

    No freebies anymore..

Aberdeen keen to strike permanent deal for Celtic target as manager Jim Goodwin lands his man
Aberdeen hope to land Liam Scales permanently after the defender signed a season-long loan from Celtic.

The Irishman was a key transfer target for Dons boss Jim Goodwin.

Goodwin tried to sign Scales during his time at St Mirren, but the Buddies were usurped by a bigger offer from the Scottish champions.

The 23-year-old signed a four-year deal last summer, moving from Shamrock Rovers, and made 13 appearances for Celtic during the 2021/22 campaign, scoring twice.

Aberdeen fans were wary of another loan signing from Celtic, following the likes of Ryan Christie and Adam Montgomery, knowing he would be unavailable for the first league game of the season when the Dons travel to Parkhead.

The Scotsman understands, however, Aberdeen are keen to strike a deal with Celtic to sign Scales permanently over the coming months.

Scales was pinpointed early on by Goodwin, who was keen to add more balance and versatility to his defensive options.

Left-footed, he is able to play centre-back in a back three or back four, as well as at left-back and wing-back.

“He tried to sign me at St Mirren when I was at Shamrock Rovers,” Scales told RedTV. “That is good as he knows what he is getting in me as he has seen me playing. I’m just looking forward to working with him.

“When I heard Aberdeen were interested, the gaffer got in touch and sold it to me."

He added: “A strong part of my game will be keeping the ball on the ground. The manager has said that’s the way he wants to play this year and was one of the attractions for me coming here.”

Jim Goodwin wants to make Liam Scales’ loan move from Celtic to Aberdeen a permanent deal.

The Irish defender has moved north to Pittodrie on a season-long loan deal.

However, some fans have been left concerned that there is no option to buy the 23-year-old at the end of his deal.

Goodwin previously tried to sign Scales for St Mirren when he was manager of the Paisley side and he hopes that the player is at the Dons beyond the end of the upcoming campaign.

He said: “I’m a big fan of the loan market as it gives you the opportunity to sign players that you would maybe not normally be able to afford.

The size of club we are we want to be signing players on permanent contracts. That conversation was had with Celtic initially.

“We wanted to know what the number was and could we make it happen. Celtic are not willing to sell Liam right now at this moment in time

That is fair enough because he is their player and he is on a long term contract (until 2025).

“Certainly we will enter into those discussions again in January if Liam has the kind of success we expect him to have.

“Hopefully he is enjoying his time at Aberdeen and will want to sign on with us. That is by and by just now. The players that we have signed are really good ones. We need to use the loan market as we see fit then we will do that.”

Not sure if there's a single thread for players out on loan anywhere (let me know if there is) but lovely ball just now for the pre-assist for the second Aberdeen goal.

Left footed CB you say? :fear:

Interested to see how he gets on this season. On course for a 3rd clean sheet in a row even though it’s been against diddies.

They're been raving about him the last 2 games, wonder how much we'd ask for him? Suspect 500k would do it.

To be fair though...not sure the technical ability of Christie was ever in doubt, he just needed better coaching to fine tune his game.

Scales isn't anywhere near that level and be it at LB with Taylor and Bernabei or at CB with CCV, Starfelt, Jenz, Welsh, Lawal and maybe even Jullien....Scales has no hope of getting into the celtic team.

Christie was ICT standout player, showed he was capable in the league.

Scales does not have the pace, lacks positional sense and Ange clearly doesn’t fancy him after spending 3.75 million on another Left back.

There is nothing there to suggest that Scales will come back and be our first choice pick at left back.

My original point still stands, good for both parties and then get rid next season if he has a successful loan.

I would not write him off completely. What if he tears it up for the sheep, makes a few team of the weeks etc? I know it’s a long shot but here’s hoping, seems to have some attributes, like attitude, eye for goal too, so for me, he is not in the Boli Ajeti Barkas basket.

He could well do that, playing in a side where there is no constant pressure to play at your best week in and week out.

But if he was good enough before this then he would have been kept and Ange wouldn’t have spent 3.75 million on someone else.

Just don’t see him making it here at all, and if he has a good season there then we know the sheep have some money to spent.

Playing for Aberdeen in the group stages of the league cup is a tad different than playing for Celtic in the group stages of the champions league...

Glad he's doing well and hoped to be proved wrong..

He's always said he's a centre half first and favoured position so would be interesting to see him there. But seems to get pushed to left back. Could he do a Charlie mulgrew? Doubt it.
