City Football Group own Lommel SK. Lommel SK bought Souza for £2.5m. Played 1 season for Lommel SK, obviously was too good for that league, then gets loaned to 1st division Belgium league.

Who owns him? Lommel SK. Who owns Lommel SK? City Football Group.

Ah right. Still seems a bit odd CFG own loads of teams so can all the guys just move about from Melbourne City to Man City for example with no fees or announcement, contacts etc? Or does one contract with a CFG club mean it’s counts for all their clubs?

I suspect contracts and things are still done but it's all done in-house.

I think you'd need to be a subject matter expert lawyer on football contracts to know exactly the mechanism required during "internal" transfers, but I would imagine at the worst case the player just physically signs a new contract with the club which is the same conditions and term as the club he is leaving.

Although since they do these types of transitions in the summer they probably review the terms anyway so it will be a new contract.

If we get Souza, that's great. If we don't, who is next cab off the rank ? Apparently all this Semedo talk is just so much hot air. Any other potential players to sign as a 6 ?

Are we going to get a CB or do we expect CCV and Starfelt to hold the fort for the whole season ?

Siegrest is not a bench warmer and needs to play games this season. He has fantastic reflexes, is athletic, brave and has great anticipation to close down a shot on goal. He and Hart will need to share games home and away.

My understanding is that the current sticking point is not the fee itself, but the structure and add-ons of the deal.

Initially we wanted loan to buy, City wanted sale with buy back option. All about trying to find a middle ground both sides are happy with.

Getting me all hot and bothered, McGrory. Sounds like all positive signs.

I’ve went from thinking this was a pipe dream to believing we’ve got a real chance in the space of 48 hours. Still a lot to be sorted out though.

If I told you we were after a tall, athletic, quick, ball playing international CB, 27, who is a first team regular for the current champions of the Belgian League you would all be getting excited. Then I tell you it's Jack Hendry.

That league is dross. The huns took NINE goals of Antwerp who were battling for the league at the time and this season a team put together with journeymen should have won the title. Union SG.

Christian Burgess who played most of his career in League one and two for Hartlepool and Portsmouth is one of their star men.

Denis Undav who ripped the league apart, scoring goal after goal was picked from the German 3rd Division.

Basically I'm holding off judgement on this guy. He looks decent in the videos but don't they always. Would like to get him but won't be gutted if we don't. There's a good few going over the top on this guy imo based on very little.

I know it sounds complicated but is there not a way we could offer both?

We do a loan with and obligation to buy say for £8million

After purchase, they got a year to buy back player but with £3mill added ontop of our original fee, so roughly £11million?

So they get first dibs if they want to buy him back but after that first year he is open to a every other club to bid for.

Although you make some generally valid points, I could easily argue the opposite too.

Would you be raging if we were signing a raw 21 year old holding midfielder from the same league, from a club who just finished fourth from bottom? I only ask because those were the exact circumstances in us signing Wanyama, who I’m sure you’d agree turned out decent.

The reality is that any top league in Europe (particularly a country who produce as many good players as Belgium) is going to have some hidden gems in it. It’s about finding the right ones.

Not saying he won't be good, saying I'm reserving judgement... based on the standard of league he's coming from and for the fees getting thrown about in here I think the try before you buy option might be the best option in this case.

I suspect a lot of it is to increase the selling power of the group.

For instance, one of the CFG clubs buy a player, but want to sell that player for a decent clip, but they get lowballed because they are Australian or Div 2 Belgium. They probably transfer the player to Manchester City with big % sell on clauses, then City have more power to ask for the fair price, and the big % gets transferred back to the smaller club to keep operating.

Yes, theoretically. It’s just a question of where the clubs can find common ground.

To be honest, I don’t see how a loan with obligation to buy benefits anyone here though, other than us being able to defer payment of the transfer fee for a year.

Big loan fee, like £4m and pay £4m next year as an obligation. Could be more tax effective or better for the selling club.

Didn't think of it that way.

Could mean, whilst I know some might not like the idea...that we could loosely afford to pay a little more for the player overall by splitting the payments like that.

The issue with that would be that theoretically the player could walk away and sign elsewhere after the initial loan period ends. So we could make an initial £4m loan investment for a one year rental and no financial return.

We could theoretically try and negotiate that it’s an obligation on City and the player’s end after that first year (but not ours), but that hardly suits City’s needs or fills the player with belief that we have confidence in him. Plus, I believe the player favours a permanent move anyway.

Regardless, if we were to pay say £7m to sign him permanently. The payment would likely be made in yearly instalments anyway, not entirely upfront.
