Taylor at his worst was always a far better option than Scales will ever be.

Taylor and Ralston have the basic fundamentals to play football at a certain level. They might lack physicality or technique but they know where to be in build up and when to move into space.

Watching Scales trying to get free to receive a pass was pitiful. He just doesn’t have a football brain.

Scales has some very good attributes, but it’s the positioning that is his major problem. I think positioning is far more teachable than skill on the ball.

The problem is he’ll be 24 by the time the season starts, he’s not actually a young boy. How much can he improve on that, rapidly as we would require? I suspect not a lot.

I quite like him, I’d loan him for a year to see if we could get a fee instead of just letting him go but I don’t think he’ll have a future here.

But he has some really good qualities as well, played a small part this season well but we move on.

Taylor’s got a * excellent ‘footballing brain’ as well btw, a very good one. Just a shame about his physical attributes there. Honestly merge him and Ralston together it’s a world class player.

Aaah, didn't realise Scales was that old. I thought he was about 20.

Well, that does make a difference. It'd take a miracle for him to make it at Celtic now.

And he has the experience of a player that age, that’s the biggest issue with him for me definitely.

    Good move for him

    Hopefully kick on now

Aberdeen FC has this afternoon completed the signing of Liam Scales on a season long loan from Celtic.

The 23-year-old Irishman, who can play at centre-back or left-back, joined Celtic in 2021 having been in high demand in Ireland, playing a significant role in Shamrock Rovers league success in 2020.

A Republic of Ireland Under 21 Internationalist, winning six caps, Liam was called up to the senior squad in 2021.

Manager Jim Goodwin sees Liam as a player who has the right mix of experience for his age and believes he will bring a different dimension to the Dons defence next season.

“Liam is a player that I have been trying to get for the last couple of years,” said the Dons boss on his third summer arrival.

He added: “I watched him very closely during his time at Shamrock Rovers, unfortunately I couldn’t get a deal done.

“Liam is 23-years-old and has already amassed nearly 200 appearances in senior football. He’s a strong character with a winning mentality, who will no doubt be a great addition to the squad.

“He is coming in as a left sided centre half, which is the position I saw him play regularly for Shamrock Rovers, and the one we believe is his best position.

“He is aggressive, mobile, very comfortable on the ball and he has all the qualities you would want in a modern-day centre back.”

I think he's underrated by some on here, he's no world-beater but every time he played it felt like he produced more offensively in one game than Taylor would in five. Unfortunately defensively he's a fraction of the player Taylor is. If he's played as a wingback where his weaknesses are less exposed or if Goodwin can improve his defending I think there's a decent player in there.

Aye good loan, it strengthens them against everyone bar us and gets some good experience to a fringe player, bar the Bodo game he looked decent when he played, a years Dev there then see him next pre season if there's a space or of there's a sale to be made at a profit

I know what you're trying to say but that's just not true. Taylor is a level above both offensively and defensively. Hope he goes out and manages to have a good season though. Won't totally write him off at the moment.

Good move for all parties, I honestly think he is an Aberdeen type level and that’s his celling.

Don’t ever see him becoming a first tee regular here at all and if he can showcase he is an SPFL level maybe they will make the move permanent.

Hopefully he'll do well there then maybe next year we'll get some offers from Championship/League 1 clubs and get a bit of money for him.

Feels like a kind of budget City Group policy. :fear:

Not surprised. Got a bit of a Charlie Mulgrew feel about him. Hopefully a season of regular football help him improve the weaker aspects of his game.
