Scott Brown is about to be appointed manager of Fleetwood Town, according to reports.

The Celtic legend is set for his first steps in management days after confirming his official retirement from playing.

He hinted he was ready to be his own man after a spell as player-coach under Stephen Glass at Aberdeen.

It was earlier reported that the 36-year-old was in the frame at English League One club Fleetwood.

And the Scottish Daily Mail are now reporting that he is the favoured candidate and will be appointed next week.

It means he will follow in the footsteps of former rival and Rangers flop Joey Barton, who also started out at Highbury Stadium.

Former Hoops defender Stephen Crainey has been in charge there after stepping up from his coaching role to be interim boss.

    Fleetwood...league 1 in England.

Interesting choice...Good league level to start out in I'd say. Will be interesting to see how he develops there if he does indeed take that job on.

Good on him if that is true.

Good league level to start at, s bit of exposure and potential cup glamour ties in his favour.

He does okay there and brings a positive style, he will get a move to a championship club you would think.

From there if he does well, and his style fits, I'd take him at Celtic assuming all things positive.

I think so but would prefer to believe he is doing that because he doesn't want to take the shine away from the club and players who have won the league.

Fleetwood Town can confirm the appointment Scott Brown as the club’s first-team Head Coach.

The born-winner, 36, makes his first step into management following an incredible playing career. He led Glasgow Celtic to 23 major trophies during a career spanning 20 years, including 55 caps for his native Scotland.

On the news, Brown said: “I’m delighted to have been named Head Coach at Fleetwood Town, it’s a great opportunity at a really exciting club.

“I’ve always had a real desire to move into management and can’t wait to meet the players and staff and get started. The hard work starts now - I’m now looking forward to getting onto the grass."

Chairman Andy Pilley added: “I’m absolutely delighted to name Scott Brown as the club’s new first-team Head Coach. It was important as a club we took our time with this appointment and was delighted by the high calibre of candidates who applied.

“After a thorough interview process it was clear Scott was the outstanding candidate and someone who’s a born leader, a serial winner, and incredibly serious about becoming a successful manager. We feel we are the perfect club for Scott to start his managerial career and he’s the perfect person to lead us to a new era at Highbury Stadium - it’s a hugely exciting appointment for Fleetwood Town."

I'd say that league is a great place to ply the trade and start out...Fleetwood won't be an easy touch. He will have some amount of work to do there.

If it all works out for him, I can see him becoming Celtic manager at some point...not directly after success with Fleetwood obviously but perhaps later down the line.
