KARAMOKO DEMBELE is still 'a long way off' a run in the first team as Ange Postecoglou addressed his future.

The 19-year-old has missed most of Celtic's campaign after suffering a fractured ankle in pre-season.


And he finally made his long-awaited return to senior action with a late appearance in the Hoops' 2-0 victory over St Mirren.

However, Postecoglou admits the club's priority is to give Dembele more time with the B team as he works his way back to full fitness.

The Celtic boss said: "It depends. It's his first tentative steps.

"He's still a long way off being able to be a meaningful contributor because he's just missed so much football.

"The idea is we try and get him some more game-time with the B team and build his fitness up.



He's one I was looking forward to working with.


Unfortunately the pre-season injury means he's missed the majority of the season.

"But he's been back training with us since he's been healthy and he's looking good.

"We've got competition in those wide areas, and depth, so that's his challenge. Mikey Johnston's back training as well.

"With those kind of players, it's giving them opportunities to develop and seeing how far their progress goes




Dembele is out of contract this summer and it remains to be seen whether he'll stay at Celtic or test the market elsewhere.

However, Postecoglou insists the club won't sit down with the winger to discuss his future until the time is right.

He added: "With all those things, it's two ways. That'll depend on Karamoko himself and where he sees his future.

"We'll sit down at the appropriate time for him and map out what's best for him, what he thinks is best for him, and we'll come to a decision."

 

get him signed on a 3 year deal he would silly not do with the guarantee of european football next season and a chance to get a starting place in the team - hopefully he isnt blinkered by his agent..

look at christie, roberts etc grass isnt always greener.

i think a german club would have a sniff at him.

 

To be fair with Christie he gets game time with Bournemouth who will likely be in the PL next season

 

Needs to brush up on the old camera vocabulary.

Do you think he will go or do you think he may get game time? It’s a pity about his injury because Ange seemed keen to use him.

If he is showing with the first team what he is there he would surely be part of the first team squad if not pushing to get a start if he played well. We are very light on quality wingers particularly given Jota is only on loan.

 

Think he's been looking to get out for a while now, hopefully signs a new deal but Ange has said he and Doak won't feature if they don't want to be here..

 

That interview up there says different, says he wants to get him gametime then sit down with him

 

Sounds like they are still trying to talk Dembele into staying. Doak on the other hand seems to have made his mind up sadly

 

Just checked what age he is now, mental he’s still only just turned 19! I thought he was at least 20. Hopefully we can try and tie him down for maybe another 2 years and if he stays injury free, let’s see if he can develop into the player we thought he could be.

 

Hopefully Ange can persuade him, resigned to losing him, anything else would be a bonus..
